Ali Dad AFZALI Born Hazarajat, Afghanistan In 2017 and 2018 the Federation University Australia Foundation awarded the Foundation Asylum Seeker scholarship for 2018 to Ali Dad Afzali. Ben Quilty wrote of Ali Dad Afzali on his blog:- "New paintings, sculpture and video of my young friend Ali Dad Afzali who braved the Timor Sea, smugglers and a wild storm, against his mother's wishes to come to Australia. Ali was 16. Ali is now studying art at Federation University in Ballarat after being generously awarded a full scholarship by the university. He is waiting patiently for his refugee status. Lynne MAKINGs (1950- ) Artist Lynne Makings is an instigator and member of the Soldiers Hill Artist Collective, an eclectic group of artists from all various disciplines, residing within the region of Soldiers Hill, Ballarat. When this work was undertaken Lynne Makings was enrolled in a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Fine Arts) at the Federation University Arts Academy. The work was awarded a Deputy VIce Chancellor's Award, and was acquired from the 'End of Year Exhibition' (EYE).Double sided artwork comprising of numerous Indian Bean Tree seeds (Catalpa Bignoniodes). The seeds have been placed between to sheets of perspex. Pattie BEERENS (1962- ) Born Sunshine, Victoria Pattie Beerens was enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Ceramics at Federation University in 2018 after completing a Graduate Certificate Visual Art at the Victorian College of Arts, University of Melbourne in 2017.Artists' Statement: Red. Broken structure on its side supported with an unrecognisable form. It is cast from an electronics packaging carton. Triangular arrows piece the structure with a spider on either side. I created fertility spiders to protect the Minoan women from predators. I collected spiders as a child to ward off the bullies and, like the octopus, spiders have eight legs and a head and body. The stylised spiders reference links between the Minoan octopus and other symbols of fertility. The natural light elongates the form in a shadow reflection on the floor. The form is surrounded by black space. This piece took on an anger I felt on the day that [Malcolm] Turnbull was overthrown and materialises the bully-boy behaviour we were witnessing. What is most interesting about this piece is that I created it as a Minoan reflection. It dawned on me , when I had it ready for the kiln - on the day that Dutton challenged the Turnbull leadership, that my anger was both reflective and contemporary because nothing seemed to have changed. There is an element of beauty in the normality of the everyday person in their natural environment. I find that the raw spontaneous moments captured in photographs tell stories and give insight into who these people are. Through portraiture, I have created a body of work that depicts small narratives of individuals in their natural environment, capturing a sense of the everyday, while hinting at an aspect of love and passion. Abbey CODY (2001 - ) Born Ballarat, Victoria Abbey Cody graduated from the Federation University Arts Academy with a Bachelor of Visual Arts in 2022. After completing VCE Studio Arts in 2019 Abbey Cody was selected for exhibition in the 'NextGen' exhibition of VCE student work at the Art Gallery of Ballarat. Geoffrey Blainey was the inaugural Chancellor of the University of Ballarat. It is assumed this is the first graduation in 1995 at the Chancellor does not wear the University of Ballarat Chancellor's Academic regalia. Another possibility is when Geoffrey Blainey was awarded an honorary doctorate. Academic gowns distinguish between the University's senior office holders and our graduates. Federation University's Chancellor wears a blue robe that is trimmed with gold and features a gold embroidered frog at the shoulder and gold oak-leaf braid below the arm hole. The Deputy Chancellor and the Vice-Chancellor also wear blue robes, with gold trims and different designs inclorporating the gold oak-leaf braid, ord or tassels. The members of the university Council wear black robes with a sole of gold. Our graduates wear black robes, with either a black trancher cap or bonnet (for professional octorate) with stoles, linings or trims in the colour of their discipline. Professor David Battersby, AM, PHD (Waikato), MHED (UNSW), Vice-Chancellor of University of Ballarat, now Federation University Australia, from July 2006 to 2016. Professor Battersby is a graduate with first class honours from the University of New South Wales and recipient of a Commonwealth Fellowship. He was awarded his PHD in the field of Sociology from the University of Waikato, New Zealand. Professor Battersby has been the recipient of numerous academic awards, including Commonwealth Relations Trust, and the Australian-Japan Foundation. He has been a Visiting Professor at universities in a number of countries and undertaken consultancies for UNESCO, OECD and a number of government agencies. Professor David Battersby was the Head of the Albury Wodonga Campus from 2000 to December 2003 and was also the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Charles Sturt University until 2006, when he took up his appointment at the University of Ballarat. Charles Sturt University has named its annual prize for leadership and good citizenship within the student body, in honour of Professor Battersby. For services to Tertiary Education as a Senior Academic and Administrator, Professor Battersby received the Order of Australia Medal in July 2015. Professor Battersby has served as a member of the Board of IDP Education Ltd, he recently stepped down as the Chair of Education Australia Limited. He is a Founding Chair of Regional Universities Network and Founding Chair of the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka.
