Melbourne Legacy
Slide, Operation Float 1957, 1957
A colour slide a USA Destroyer 130 on Port Philip in 1957. It was during Operation Float which was an event run by Melbourne Legacy to take Junior legatees on an outing. It could have been to naval boats such as HMAS Cerberus or to a Yacht club. It gave the junior legatees the opportunity to see a naval boat in action, spend time on the water or try sailing. In 1957 it appears to be several smaller boats taking small groups of children out on the bay. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. In many cases the original images were not well focussed and the digital image the best available.A record of outings being organised for children.Colour slide of a destroyer in a red edged Kodachrome cardboard mount.Printed on reverse in red ink 'Kodachrome Transparency / Processed by Kodak'. Handwritten in blue ink 'USA Destroyer 130 / 19'. Imprinted in black ink '15'operation float, junior legatee outings -

Framed Photo of H.M.A.S. VENDETTA Daring Class Destroyer
HMAS Vendetta was one of three Daring-class destroyers built for and operated by the Royal Australian Navy. The destroyer was built by Williamstown Naval Dockyard and entered service in 1958. During her early career, Vendetta was deployed to the Far East Strategic Reserve on multiple occasions. In 1965 and 1966, the destroyer undertook deterrence patrols during the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation. Along with several runs escorting the troop transport HMAS Sydney to South Vietnam, from late 1969 to early 1970 Vendetta was assigned to combat operations and became the only Australian-built warship to serve in a shore bombardment role during the Vietnam War. he ship underwent a two-year modernisation from 1971 to 1973, and in December 1974 was one of thirteen RAN warships involved in Operation Navy Help Darwin after Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin. Several more deployments were made to the Far East, up until 1978. In October 1979, the destroyer was decommissioned, and served as a parts hulk for sister ship HMAS Vampire. Vendetta was sold for ship breaking in January 1987. 1002 Rectangular Shaped Glass Covered Photo Frame, 1002.1 H.M.A.S, VENDETTA FIRST COMMISSION MAP. H.M.A.S. VENDETTA Daring Class Destroyer. -

Book, Thalaba the Destroyer Vol1, 1821
The original owner of this book seems to have been John Bland. He is most important in the early history of Port Fairy and had a business in Port Fairy with John Cowtan (corn millers and general merchants). The Cowtans originally had land in the vicinity of the Cassady property " Boughton", Merri River ( in Caramut Road near Cassady's Bridge today) and were related by marriage to the Cassadys. A later owner of the book was William Anderson whose father came from the Yangery district in 1854 and established the property of " Rosemount" and William remained in this area until his death in 1909. The Andersons were related by marriage to the Cassadys and this book came to us following a clearing sale at the Cassady property " Boughton". This book is of great interest as its ownership probably dates back to the 1840s. It is associated with the families of Bland, Cowtan, Cassady and Anderson, all early setlers in Warrnambool and District. This is a brown leather- covered book of 271 pages. The cover has gold decorative borders and patterns and gold lettering. The pages are gilt edged. The book is the fourth edition of volume one of a Robert Southey poem and has a Preface and Books 1 to 5 in the notes. The inscriptions are handwritten in black ink. One signature is not deciphered.
