Malcolm Fraser was a Liberal Party Prime Minister of Australia from 1975 to 1983. He was appointed as caretaker Prime Minister following the dismissal of the Whitlam government in 1975 and subsequently won the double dissolution election. He was defeated by Bob Hawke in 1983. The Whitlam ALP government came to power in 1972 after 23 years in opposition. Whitlam's government was aspirational in terms of its social justice and equality agenda. The government was dismissed on 11 November 1975 by the governor general, Sir John Kerr; this act was unprecedented.
