In 1851 Moses Thomas purchased 400 acres, including a half mile frontage to the Plenty River, at Mernda (then known as Morang) where he operated a farm, inn and other business. In 1865 Moses Thomas was appointed Engineer, Clerk and Collector for the Morang District Road Board. In this role he would have been responsible for overseeing the collection of local property rates and the maintenance and construction of local roads and drains. Road District Boards were one of the earliest forms of local government in Victoria. The Morang or Upper Plenty Road District was established in 1862. It covered part of what is today Mernda, Doreen, South Morang, Mill Park and Bundoora. In 1875, the area merged with the Whittlesea Road District to form the Shire of Whittlesea. Moses Thomas briefly served as a Councillor with the Shire of Whittlesea until his death in 1878. Correspondence. Letter, paper, handwritten text with seal. This child’s wash board, a play item, is possibly home-made. Wash boards for rubbing and washing clothes were common household clothes- washing items in Australia until the mid 20th century, along with wood coppers, washing troughs, copper sticks and simple wringers. By the 1950s and 60s washing machines were becoming more prevalent and the wash board was no longer a common item in households. This item is retained as an interesting example of a twentieth Century child's toy.This is a rectangular-shaped unpainted wooden wash board with clear rippled glass inserted in the centre and held in by four metal screws. These two boards were clipped on to the creased edge of trousers and the item stored in this way. They were used in lieu of irons in the days before electric irons. These items come from the household of the Angus family in Warrnambool. Dr William Roy Angus (1901-1970) studied medicine in Adelaide and Edinburgh. He practised medicine in South Australia and at Nhill before coming to Warrnambool in 1939. In later years he specialized in ophthalmology. The Angus family lived at ‘Birchwood’, a house now demolished. Dr Angus was very civic-minded and was active in a great number of community groups.These items are retained because of their connection to past years and because of their association with the well-known local Warrnambool doctor, Dr Angus. These are two rectangular pieces of wood with three metal clips on each. Two of the metal clips are badly rusted. Both pieces have printed material etched into the wood. BlairRecord of various Shire of Eltham infrastructure works undertaken during the period of 1952-1962 involving bridge and road reconstruction projects, sometimes with Eltham Shire Council Project Reference numbers quoted. It was during this period that a number of significant improvements were made to roads and new bridges constructed within the shire that remain in place as of present day (2022). In many situations, the photos provide a tangible visible record of infrastructure that existed throughout the early days of the Shire. Built in 1860, the Eltham Courthouse is the oldest public building remaining in Eltham. In its early days the building was used as the meeting place and office of the Eltham District Road Board and as an overflow classroom for the local school. The Eltham Courthouse ceased operational duties in 1984 and is now used by various community groups including Eltham District Historical Society. It was listed on the Victorian Heritage Register (Number H0784) in 1982. The building is of architectural significance because it retains intact early features. These include use of handmade bricks, simple decoration, roof trusses, timber ceiling boards, original windows, doors and associated hardware and a collection of court furniture. Additions to the court house have been done in a manner which did not interfere with the fabric of the original building.
