Embark for England 22.7.1915, promoted L/Cpl 6.10.1916, embark for France 5.3.1917, transfer to 5th Div AMC 23.3.1917, transfer to 15th Field Ambulance 25.3.1917, WIA 8.5.1917 GSW’s to legs, rejoin unit 26.6.17, awarded the Military Medal (MM) near Perrone 2.9.18 as a stretcher bearer, awarded a bar to the Military Medal 29/30.9.1918 over 36 hours as a stretcher bearer at Bellicourt, hospital 24.10.1918 accidental injury bayonet wound left thigh, embark for Australia transport duty as N/Staff Masseur 19.4.1919, discharged from the AIF 23.9.1919. A bar to the Military Medal means he has actually won two MM’s. Plastic covered folder with black binding containing typed diary of A R POWNALL 22.7.15 to 9.6.19, 120 pages. Vertical file, Frederick WiIliam Mawson of Surrey Hills, his family and descendants

Frederick William Mawson and his wife Mary (nee Mullard) and baby daughter, Beatrice Mary migrated to Victoria as steerage passengers, arriving in Melbourne on 1 July 1882 on the sailing ship the ‘Holmsdale’. They settled in Bona Vista Avenue, Surrey Hills (house demolished) and he established a jam factory in Boundary (Warrigal) Road. Further children of the family were Harriett, Muriel, Ethel, Winifred, John and Frederick William (Jnr). The later died in WW1 and there is a transcript of his diary in this collection. Four of the daughters became nurses, three serving in WW1. The other son John became a local builder, who after the war built 'Holmsdale' in Union Road as a convalescent home to be run by his sisters. After the death of his first wife Frederick (Snr) married Catherine Small, a widow with children of her own.The family were early settlers in Surrey Hills and their story in relation to the service of local men and women during WW1 is well documented.Vertical file of information related to the Mawson family which includes: 1. Transcripts: Cheetham Diary / Early Tarnagulla, 1857 (original diary) and 1928, 1997 (manuscripts)

Donald Clark Collection.Two typed documents, each of several pages. One is a transcript of part of the diary of James Cheetham during the time of his voyage from Liverpool, England to Tarnagulla, Australia. The other connected document is a typed account by amateur historian Donald Clark with the title 'Early History of Sandy Creek and Tarnagulla Goldfields'. It was 'transposed' by him in 1997 from a manuscript written in 1928 by the wife of James Cheetham, Dulcie. Her manuscript was compiled from the contents of original diaries she had which had been written by James Cheetham and Ed Peters when they lived in Sandy Creek/Tarnagulla during the towns early years.
