The pants are knitted in stocking stitch with elastic threaded through at the waist. The dress is sleeveless with a pink button on each shoulder. The Singer sewing machine was purchased [in New Plymouth, NZ] by the donor, Yvonne's, parents as a birthday/Christmas present when she was about six or maybe a little older – therefore about 1935. Much, much later, in the 1960s, it was given to her daughter, Susan, who like Yvonne seldom used it because if the seam was not correctly tied off the whole seam unravelled.Singer sewing machine and original box. The jacket would have fitted a young baby up to three months old. It may have been used at a later date for dolls clothes because of the addition of hooks and eyes to the front opening of the jacket. These were sewn on with orange cotton.It is a lovely example of an old lace-trimmed, hand-made baby jacket. Cream jacket to fit up to three months old. Collar and sleeves and edges trimmed with lace. When celluloid was invented and first came to prominence in the 1870s, dolls were nearly all breakable and fragile--bisque and china dolls were easily shattered and papier mache and wax easily ruined. Celluloid is one of the first synthetic plastics. It is a plastic created from wood products that includes cellulose nitrate and camphor. However Celluloid is flammable and deteriorates easily if exposed to moisture, and can be prone to cracking and yellowing with certain formulations. Celluloid dolls were produced as late as the 1950s, but the vast majority were produced from 1900 through the 1940s. This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scots Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had four daughters – Frances (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved from Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. Celluloid dolls were very popular in the late 19th to mid 20th century. They were lighter and less fragile than porcelain dolls and were therefore more durable. Celluloid is one of the first synthetic plastics ever created. It is made from wood products that include cellulose nitrate and camphor.
