Annie Whitla was a student at Ballarat Technical Art School from 1915 - 1919. In 1920 she was appointed Drawing Mistress at Ararat High School. She returned to Ballarat and taught night classes in Photography at Ballarat Technical Art School from 1921 - 1922. During this period she was X-ray assistant at Ballarat Hospital. She had a teaching post at Warrnambool High School from 1923 until her retirement. In 1926 she joined the Warrnambool Hospital as an assistant in the X-ray Department.
