Long coffee coloured wool lace evening gown with long sleeves and train. According to the donor (see correspondence in supp. file), this gown was made from Australian wool woven in Bradford and made up in Paris. It was given to the Melbourne Legacy Wives Association by Mr Ken Clarke (former head of the Wool Board and a Legatee) for use in a parade of garments by the Legacy Wives Association. This particular gown won an award (Wool Award/Gown of the Year?) in c.1957 and was on display in the window of the Georges department store in Melbourne.Long coffee coloured wool lace evening gown with long sleeves and train. The brothers in the photograph are George, Alkinos and Dimitri Paizis who arrived in Australia from the Ithacan village of Kioni some time in the 1920s. Their parents were Anastasia and Galeri Paizis. The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Items in the collection were largely produced for, or purchased by women in Melbourne, and includes examples of outerwear, protective wear, nightwear, underwear and costume accessories.The donor, a resident of Kew, provided a handwritten provenance with the donation. "This is an heirloom dress, worn in Tasmania by a Fletcher relative c. 1860s, 1870s. It was for years, with another in the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, then borrowed for concerts. In (the) 1990s it was enlarged at the back for a Centenary reenactment. I thought you might like it for your collection."19th century white cotton day dress, photographed as accessioned, which is printed with a design in black. The front has a 3/4 length buttoned opening. The dress has wide ruffles in the same fabric at the base of the skirt. The later 1990s inserts which can be seen in the first and third images have been removed in preparation for the dress to be restored. The buttons are a later addition. The portrait photo is of John (Yiannis) Raftopoulos, father of Michael, Theodora and Dennis. John arrived in Australia in 1912 at the age of 13 together with his father Mihalis Raftopoulos. Mihalis had first come to Australia in 1895 and again in 1906; he finally returned to Ithaca in 1918. John however remained and eventually established his own business, Central Fruit Agency, in Melbourne's Victoria Market. He was also in partnership with his brothers-in-law John and Peter Karantgis in the London Cafe in Elizabeth Street Melbourne.John Raftopoulos was typical of many early young Ithacan males who settled in Melbourne and who with a strong entrepreneurial spirit gradually established themselves in various businesses.A black and white studio portrait photograph of a smartly dressed young man. Arthur Koutsouvelis and Aspasia Raftopoulos are the couple in the photograph which was taken. Arthur arrived in Australia from Ithaca in 1952. He and Aspasia were married in February 1954. Aspasia was the younger daughter of George and Ioulia Raftopoulos. Marriage between Ithacans was encouraged by parents, however many many second generation Ithacans married Greeks from other parts of Greece - Ithacans in the day considered that this was marrying a 'xeno', (a foreigner). Some also married non Greeks, although at the time this was the exception. Today, like the rest of Australia, Melbourne's Ithacan community has become diverse. Sisters, Desma and Sophia Paizis are photographed dressed in Greek traditional costumes. They are attending the Grecian Ball which was held at Melbourne's Exhibition Building and were part of a dance group preforming Greek traditional dance. Veil worn by Margary (Madge) Isabelle Brydon. Was later worn by many (about 15) local ladies who lived in the area of Rushworth. Madge's daughters, Molly and Isobel both wore the veil at their weddings in 1938 and 1945. Donor is granddaughter of bride. Veil made by bride and described in the Waranga Basin newspaper at the time. Margary (Madge) Brydon married Edward (Ward) Sprunt at the bride's family home in Carag Carag, Victoria on 10th April 1912. Veil also worn by Mary (Molly) Leith at her wedding to William (Bill) Paynter on 18 January 1932 at Stanhope Presbyterian ChurchCream 1912 cotton net Princess veil.
