Photograph of a double storied stone building, it has a three quarters length open verandah along the first floor. The name 'Symonds Criterion Family Hotel' is painted above the first floor. There is a large lamp on a bracket on the right hand side of the building. To the left of the main structure there is a smaller weatherboard building with the word 'Hotel' painted along the top. There are several groups of people both on the ground and on the balcony, also in front of the hotel is a very up market buggy/wagonette with a coachman? Driving. This hotel was on the corner of Mundy and Hargreaves Streets, and is significant as centre of events as it overlooked the original Market Square. Penleigh Boyd, Robin and Patricia Boyd's son, writes “Prior to 1950 Robin, like most other amateur or hobby photographers, took black and white printed photographs. The oldest slides date from 1950 when Robin and Patricia travelled to Europe on Robin’s Robert Haddon Travelling Scholarship.” In 1948 Robin Boyd was awarded ‘joint first place’ in the Robert Haddon competition for his design of Mildura art gallery. The scholarship helped fund their first overseas trip. Robin and Patricia were passengers on the Greek ship “Cyrenia” departing in May 1950, passing through the Suez Canal and landing in Genoa five weeks later. For six months, they travelled extensively throughout Europe (predominantly driving themselves) - France, Italy, United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain.Colour slide in a mount. Belgrave railway bridge looking towards Bayview Road from Terrys Ave, 1947. It shows a bus crossing the bridge onto (now) Belgrave-Gembrook Road, followed by a male cyclist wearing a dark overcoat and bowler hat. A man wearing a homburg hat is crossing the footbridge beside the main bridge towards the main street. There is a pale van parked (or driving past) a dairy on the corner of Bayview Rd and Belgrave-Gembrook Road. A brick toilet block is shown with a sign saying 'MEN' on a nearby lamp post.

This is a typical situation confronted by RDNS Sisters when travelling to the home of a patient to give them nursing care. The Sister is driving an Australian built Holden vehicle made in the mid 1960s which was part of the RDNS fleet of cars.From its inception in 1885 the Trained nurses of the then named Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), later named Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) gave high quality nursing care to patients in their own homes. They nursed patients referred by Hospitals and General Practitioners giving treatments, such as injections, wound care and doing other procedures, as well as assisting them with general care when required. Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) had its own full fleet of vehicles by the mid 1960s. In many areas there were unsealed roads, in various conditions, which the Sisters negotiated to reach their patients to give care. Seat-belts had been introduced to Victoria in 1959 and District fitted them to their cars from 1962, even though they did not become compulsory until 1970. The Melways Directory of maps was introduced in 1966 which was a boon to the Sisters, though it was a few years before it went beyond Seville, so those that gave nursing care in the Launching Place, Yarra Junction, Warburton and Powelltown area used a large paper map and once the particular house was found an 'x' was marked to denote the street and approximate site of the house to assist the visiting Sisters.
