John Fleming and his wife, May built this business from a 'ham and beef shop' to a more modern delicatessen from c 1930 until the 1950s. May and her mother, Mrs Ethel Pallisser, cooked 'potted meats', pies and rissoles. John cooked and boned the bacon and other meats. They also sold Herbert Adams cakes which were delivered in large slabs from which John cut into one and two pound pieces. Initially the shop had counters which they replaced with glass cases. The Flemings lived at the shop until the accommodation became too cramped. John Barry Fleming (1912-2010) married Ethel May Palliser (1915-1997) in 1938. Prior to marriage, May lived with her parents: father Henry or Harry Palliser, a bricklayer, and Ethel nee Johnson in Norfolk Road. Buildings shown on west side of Sussex Street: Criterion House, at the time occupied by Murrell's Newsagency, the Grenville Shire civic hall and offices, the shop at one time occupied by J. Y. Clarke, barber & tobacconist. The roof of Barr's shop and dwelling can be seen (the building itself is obscured by a tree), and houses further along the street owned by J.G. Allan, Ernest Ball and Oscar Ball. The Royal Standard Hotel appears to have been demolished. On the east side of the street, the roof and signage of the Railway Hotel is visible, and the roof of Cornish's shoe shop. The photograph is undated but was probably taken in between the late 1920s (when the Royal Standard Hotel was demolished) and 1932, when the Murrell family moved its newsagency into the building on the other side of the street previously occupied by Dan Cornish. Note: a gap between the Shire Hall and the next building suggests that the shop and dwelling originally occupied by the Austin family has been demolished.Black and white copy of original photograph which has been mounted on blue card. Born 9 May 1901 in Prahran. Her Record of Conduct and Service describes her as being 5' 2½" and 8 stones 3 lbs, with hazel eyes, dark brown hair, a fresh complexion and of good appearance. She belonged to the Church of Christ. She commenced training at the Police Training Depot in 1929. In December of that year she passed the examination for a licence as a Shorthand Writer under the Evidence Act. In 1938 she won first prize for the 'empire-wide' King's Police Gold Medal Essay Competition - the set topic for that year was 'Juvenile Crime - Its Causes and Treatment'. The essay was subsequently published in two parts in The Australian Quarterly. Jessie suffered ill health in later life and died after a stroke on 3 June 1952. Black and white portrait of Frederick John Cato seated holding folded papers. The coloured photo is an A4 print of a painting of Fred Cato in the Canberra National Portrait Gallery. In both photos Frederick is seated and dressed in a suit, vest and tie. Frederick John Cato (1858 -1935) was a grocer, part of the Moran & Cato chain of some years ago. He was born in Stawell and went to 502 (Stawell State School) for many years eventually becoming an assistant teacher. He resigned in 1887 to go teaching in new Zealand. Frederick was a generous man and Cato prizes were presented to pupils attending 502. Stawell benefited in many ways from his generosity. Cato Park was named in his honor. Vera Johnson, the wife of James Eccles Johnson, lived in Linton from about 1935 until the 1950s. The Johnsons lived in the house in Sussex Street formerly owned by the Donaldson family. Vera Johnson was an active member of the Linton community - her name is mentioned in records of the Presbyterian Church, and also in records of the CWA Linton Branch. She was an enthusiastic gardener and regularly supplied flowers for the church. She had two children of her own (Eric and Betty), and often provided care for her nieces, Shirley and Elizabeth (Beth) Lock, who lived with her for extended periods when their mother was ill.
