The glass comes from Eckers Hotel (Dooleys/Taylors/Eckers Hotel), once a well-known hotel in Warrnambool (on the east side of Liebig Street, between Lava and Koroit Streets). It was established by James Dooley in 1875 and closed in 1962. Joseph Ecker, who changed the name to 'Eckers' in 1913, was the licensee from 1910 to 1932. The name 'Eckers' was retained until the hotel closed. Eckers Hotel had a fine reputation as a comfortable and well-managed hotel and many sporting meetings were held there. The hotel building was demolished and the site today is occupied by an estate agency.This item has social significance significance as a glass with an inscription of a Warrnambool hotel (Eckers) and retained by a patron (Harry Heathcote, a local Warrnambool man) when the hotel closed. This book has the stamp of ‘Ecker’s Hotel’. This hotel was on the east side of Liebig Street between Lava and Koroit Streets and was opened in 1875 by James Dooley. It was take over in 1885 by James Taylor and then by Joe Ecker in 1910. When Joe Ecker left the hotel in 1923 the licensees following retained the name ‘Ecker’s’. The hotel closed in 1962. It is the only hotel in Warrnambool to have had no other name except that of three of its owners. This book is only of interest because of its connection with Ecker’s Hotel, well-known in Warrnambool for 90 years as a comfortable, well-managed place to stay or visit. No doubt many of the clientele were farmers and this would explain the reason for the book being retained at the hotel. This is a hard cover book of 408 pages. It has a green cover with black lettering on the front cover and on the spine. It has a Preface, a Contents page, 25 chapters of Text, a Gestation Table and an Index. There are many black and white photographs and illustrations scattered throughout the text. The back page is torn and the cover is scuffed and the book is a little warped out of shape. The Warrnambool Baseball Club was formed around 1932 initially and reformed in the late 1940’s. They played in a regional competition with other country teams in the district.Eckers Hotel was a Liebig Street landmark from the 1870s until 1960s. It had numerous licensees in that time and the licensee at the time of this advertisement, L. I. Elder, was licensee in1944 and again in 1946. Four page leaflet in cream card with black text.
