Before her marriage to Ron Kirner, Joan Hood taught at the Ballarat Girls' Junior Technical School in the late 1950s. The Girls' school was a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. After entering politics Joan Kirner was Minister for Education (1988) and Premier of Victoria (1990 to 1992). In 1992 Premier of Victoria Joan Kirner visited her former workplace to officially open and name four new facilities, marking stage 2 of the school's State Works and Services Development Project. Honoured in the naming ceremony was the late Albert Steane, the late Kenneth Fleckoe and Mr Jack Barker, President of the Ballarat School of Mines. The fourth facility was the recently opened carpentry and joinery complex. Mrs Kirner said naming the building in honour of the three men would act as a continual reminder of their contribution to education in Australia and what they have passed on to future generations. She said the Government and the State Training Board saw the college as not only one that was most important to Victoria but also nationally and internationally. During a visit to Mount Helen campus a student presented Prince Charles a dandelion for his lapel. The Sun of 29 October 1974 ran the headline 'Some Splendid Girl Gives Charles Flower'. The newspaper reported that Prince Charles did not have the flower when he left a Ballarat Civic Hall reception for a tour of the Institute of Advanced Education at Mt Helen. When asked where he got the flower Prince Charles said 'It was given to me by some splendid girl'. The weatherboard Ballarat East State School SS 1071 was formerly known as Specimen Hill. According to 'Visions and Realisations' The Eureka gold lead opened in August 1852, running from Little Bendigo, south beneath Yarrowee Creek into Pennyweight flat, where it was joined 100 yards or so from the intersection of main and Eureka Streets by the Canadian Lead. State School 1071 was formerly known as Ballarat Common School No. 71, and was founded by the Free Presbyterian Church on Specimen Hill in Eureka Street, Ballarat on 01 January 1854. On 20 May 1869 the trustees of the Presbyterian School, Specimen Hill, Ballarat, consented to the transfer of the site to the Board of Education. On 01 September 1870, Specimen Hill, Ballarat, was vested in the Board and then became known as SS 1071. On 01 March 1879 the Minister, The Hon. William Collard Smith, and William Dobbie, Inspector of School Buildings, visited Ballarat to report on the buildings with a view to extensions and renovations. The minister issued instructions for the old wooden part of the school to be demolished, and brick additions to be erected, so that the whole premises would accommodate 350 students. Ballarat Junior Technical School opened in 1913. It was located at the Dana Street State School. As numbers grew a larger building was needed. Plans were drawn and a school built within the grounds of the School of Mines. Students started at this new school in 1921. It was officially opened on 9 September 1921 by Sir Alexander, resident of Creswick, local member for North Ballarat and the Minister for Education. He also opened the School Fair which coincided with the buildings ceremony. This was a fair on a grand scale and lasted two days and nights. Staff and students worked for weeks making articles for sale. A parent's committee led by Mr J Rogerson, a local police detective, had been organizing for months. As part of the ceremony for the opening of the school the Strachan Orchestra was engaged to play. .1 Taxi hire provided transport for the Strachan Orchestra for two visits at a total cost of Five Shillings. On 11 April 2017 Education Minister James Merlino and Wendouree MP Sharon Knight visited Federation University to unveil designs for the new Ballarat Tech School where students will be able to grow their trade skills. Ballarat Tech School will focus on science, new energy technologies, food and fibre, advanced manufacturing and information technology. The M.B. John Building on Albert Street will be refurbished at Federation University SMB Campus at an estimated cost between $6 to $10 million. The fifteen partnered schools are Ballarat Christian College, Ballarat Clarendon College, Ballarat Grammar, Ballarat High School, Ballarat Secondary College, Ballarat Specialist School, Damascus College, Daylesford Secondary College, Federation College, Loreto College, Mount Clear College, Phoenix Community College, St Patrick’s College Ballarat and Yuille Park Community College.
