Opera House, in which Eero Saarinen claims responsibility ...Account of the international competition for the Sydney Opera House, in which Eero Saarinen claims responsibility for the outcome. The building costs progressively grow due to the redesign of the shells to conform to more conventional construction methods. Article concludes that, despite cost increase that will eventually be forgotten, the success of the Sydney Opera House will be determined by whether the initial vision will be carried through. A copy of the published article was in the Sydney Opera House scrapbook in the desk cupboard (item P1378.20).Original manuscript of an article published in The Australian on 20.09.1965. Document - Manuscript, Robin Boyd, Under Tension, 1963
... Eero Saarinen... and Phyllis Murphy Yuncken Freeman Sidney Myer Music Bowl Eero ...Boyd argues that modern architecture has triggered a necessity for greater harmony between architects and engineers. Boyd describes the architectural qualities of tension structures through an analysis of several case studies including projects by Frei Otto and Boyd's own house at Walsh St. Being a relatively new concept, Boyd criticises the neglect towards smaller buildings in this structural system, and also highlights some of its shortcomings. A 2-page letter from 'Arthur' (surname unknown) at the University of Melbourne's Department of Civil Engineering provides feedback to Boyd on his analyses of the chosen case studies.Original manuscript of article published in The Architectural Review Vol.134, No.801, November 1963, pp. 324 - 334.
