House was rented by Kim Tarpey between October 1983 and June 1985. It was one of the buildings originally part of Birds Orchard. Harold Bird was her landlord, a retired primary school teacher who, when she knew him was driving the mobile library bus. Her partner had him as a teacher at Montmorency Primary in grade 4. The house was next door to what is now a bushland reserve near the Pauline Toner Reserve. It was on the corner of Pitt and Arthur St - the driveway was near the roundabout and went off to the right of the driveway that now belongings to 220 Pitt street and which was bushland at the time. It was sold in 1985 and consequently demolished, a large house has replaced it. It was situated approximately where the front door of No. 218 is nowadays with the facade roughly in line with the now garage wall to the left of this front door.Digital file only - scanned from personal photo album on loan (27 images) List of images EDHS_04644-1.tif Kitchen window looking towards Eucalyptus Road, 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-2.tif 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-3.tif 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-4.tif Kitchen looking towards Pitt Street Reserve, 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-5.tif 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-6.tif Bathroom walkway/laundry, 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-7.tif 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-8.tif 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-9.tif 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-10.tif 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-11.tif 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-12.tif 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-13.tif 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-14.tif 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-15.tif 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-16.tif 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-17.tif Lounge window looking towards Mount Pleasant Road, 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-18.tif Fire place in lounge, 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-19.tif Fire place in lounge, 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-20.tif View from lounge room window looking towards corner of Eucalyptus and Mount Pleasant roads, 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-21.tif View from lounge room window looking towards corner of Eucalyptus and Mount Pleasant roads, 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-22.tif View from lounge room looking towards Pitt Street and Wattle Grove, 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-23.tif View from lounge room looking towards Pitt Street and Wattle Grove, 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-24.tif 218 Pitt Street, Eltham, c.1985 EDHS_04644-25.tif Back garden showing previous tank stumps. Home to Eltham Shire Councillor Ernie Andrew, newsagent and his wife Ellen. Known locally as Cook's Cottage due to its resemblance to Captain Cook's cottage in Fitzroy Gardens. Ernie and Ellen can be seen standing at the entrance. Erected after Nov 1931 and before Dec 1945, most likely by 1934. The Andrews owned the property next door (downhill) and it was there that Ernie Andrew loaned land for the first Eltham Fire Station in 1928. The house on that block was present in a November 1931 aerial photograph; the subject house was not. In November 1934 Mrs Ellen Andrew leased a 5-roomed brick villa in Arthur Street to Eltham Shire Council for use as temporary offices. The new Shire office was opened in November 1940 across the road. It is possible but not yet confirmed, that the Cooks Cottage was the brick villa leased to Council and then the Andrews moved in late 1940 after Council moved into their new offices across the road. Or, they could have built Cooks Cottage and leased their old home next door to Council. Further investigation will hopefully reveal more. The cottage was situated immediately east of the underground carpark entrance off Arthur Street and directly opposite to the present-day entrance to the Eltham Village carpark. Ernie Andrew's wife, Ellen, died 13 July 1946 and Ernie died 29 March 1950. Subsequent ownership has not been identified. Aerial photos show the cottage was still present in April 1963. Local advice suggests the building was used as a doctor’s surgery in the mid-1960s. The property was purchased by Council in August 1964 and demolished shortly afterwards to provide additional area for a carpark already in existence from Pryor Street (Diamond Valley Mirror, 2 Sep. 1964, p1). The carpark was extended behind the Eltham Arcade from Pryor Street through to Luck Street in February 1966 (Diamond Valley News, Tuesday, Feb. 1, 1966, p7) The same view today https://maps.app.goo.gl/KfqGSDqYnPq6jCU69 ELTHAM SHIRE OFFICES (1934, November 9). McMahon) had a busy time during the week transferring all the books, documents, etc. of the council from the temporary offices (the shire secretary's residence at Kangaroo Ground) to the new offices. The new premises are owned by Mrs. E. J. Andrew, from whom the council has leased them, and consist of a five roomed brick villa which has been completed to meet the council's requirements. The Margaret Ball (Pre 1960s Houses) Collection was a personal project initiated to mark the year 2000 and arose as a result of the disappearance of many pre-1960s parts of Eltham due to development. Approximately 200 pre-1960s style houses that were left in Eltham between Main Road and east to Bible Street, between Cecil Street to the north and south to Dalton Street were photographed in late 1999. Not all of the houses could be photographed; some because the garden or trees blocked the view of the house, others because of rubbish or cars were in the way, some because people were working on the house or in the gardens at the time.Colour photographic print eltham, houses, streets, margaret ball (pre 1960s houses) collection, dudley street, eltham fish shop, eltham cake kitchen, shops
