Glenelg Shire Council Cultural CollectionJournal - Fisherman's Union Minute Book, Charles (Carl) Gustav Patterson, 1905
... These early unions provided members with exclusive access to resources like cold storage and sales networks, but also functioning as barriers to non-European participation. ...These early unions provided members with exclusive access to resources like cold storage and sales networks, but also functioning as barriers to non-European participation. ...The Fisherman's Union in Victoria evolved from the formalisation of the fishing industry in the late 19th century, leading to state-based unions like the Victorian Fishermen's Union. These early unions provided members with exclusive access to resources like cold storage and sales networks, but also functioning as barriers to non-European participation. This union represented a shift from informal fishing practices to a regulated industry, reflecting broader trends in Australian trade unionism during this period. The book belonged to the family of Charles Gustav Patterson who was part of the original Portland Lifeboat crew. Receipts collected by Roy Patterson were inside the book and have been accessioned separately.Interim statement pending further research: This minute book is significant because it belonged to Charles Gustav Patterson. Patterson was one of the early European settlers to Portland and as well as being a part of the early fishing industry here was part of the Portland Lifeboat crew who took part in the rescue of survivors from the Admella Shipwreck. The book details repairs done to the Portland Lifeboat as well as documenting its history - in particular its time at the Portland Botanic Gardens. The book also documents the early history off the union movement in Portland. This book has been in the Patterson family until donation to the Glenelg Shire Cultural Collection.Dark blue book with brown/orange spine and corners. The front cover has paint splashes and splatters on it. The spine has a dark red label located in the top half of the spine. It reads, ' Minute Book'/ The corners on both the front and back cover are worn with the top layer having worn off. Both the inside of the front and back cover have blue marbled paper. The pages of the book are numbered in the top corners. The pages have blue lines and a red lined margin. The inside has hand written minutes. The first page is titled ' Minutes of ordinary General Meeting Held Feb 24th 1905'. The handwriting is in black ink. Page 262 is loose and detached. The final page - 286 - has the minutes dated 8.1. 1937. The book contained receipts and other papers which have been catalogued separately.fishing, union, unionism, trade unions, portland lifeboat, admella, patterson, glenelg shire cultural collection, portland harbour, fisherman's union -

Deemed unfit for service when the Germans invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, Grossman became a special correspondent for The Red Star, the Red Army newspaper. ... In the 1980s and 1990s many were destroyed as a result of a European Union decision to subsidize fishermen to scrap their boats to tackle overfishing. ...Kioni is a small fishing village on Ithaca where caïque boats were used by fishermen and were once an important form of transport for goods and for people prior. The people in the photograph appear to be lined up along the water's edge awaiting a boat to arrive.A caïque (or kaiki) is a traditional handmade wooden fishing boat found among the waters of the Ionian or Aegean Sea and were once the main form of transport for the many Greek islands, moving people and goods across Greece's archipelago. In the 1980s and 1990s many were destroyed as a result of a European Union decision to subsidize fishermen to scrap their boats to tackle overfishing. Hundreds of beautiful and perfectly sound vessels ended up in landfills resulting in the loss of an integral part of Greece's long seafaring tradition and heritage. Sadly Cyclone Ianos which struck the island in September 2020 destroyed many of the remaining caiques on the island.A sepia photograph, which has a partial white border. The image has been affected by light across the bottom LH corner. The visible section shows a group of people lined up along the side of a wharf like structure. There are four two storey houses in the middle distance with a hillside in the background. -

This band of mainly Jewish musicians arrived in Sydney, Australia, in 1937. The decision of some of them to stay brought them into conflict with the aggressively protectionist Musicians’ Union of Australia. They gained employment at a high-end Sydney nightclub but when war came, were forced to come to terms with a change in their status – from celebrities to enemy aliens. Denounced for alleged espionage activities in Russia, three were interned and the band broke up. In this major recounting of the experience of the Weintraubs Syncopators, Kay Dreyfus pieces together the complex personal, social and political forces at work in this story of migration at a time of insecurity, fear and dramatic conflict." The Tatura group of camps were built after the beginning of World War 2, and held prisoners of war (enemy military) and civilian internees (enemy nationals, regardless of political affiliation, either living in Australia or in Allied territories overseas). The Weintraubs Syncopators' members were just some of the civilians caught up in the conflict. Paperback book. Glossy black front cover, black & white photo of group of musicians. Blue & white text. He exhibited at the Victorian Academy of Arts in 1877 and also held an exhibition of gum leaf paintings at Stevens Gallery, Melbourne in 1893. By 1896 he was receiving orders from heads of states in Europe ...This gum leaf painting is one of a pair displayed on foil in the same frame. It is typical of many paintings by the self-taught Australian artist Alfred William Eustace (1820-1907). A.W. Eustace, a well-known Australian artist, was born in Berkshire, England, where he was an assistant gamekeeper to the Earl of Craven at Ashdown Park. He migrated to Australia with his wife and children in 1851 and camped on the Ullina and Eldorado Runs on the Black Dog Creek at Chiltern, which was in excess of 50,000 acres of grazing land. A.W. Eustace was employed as a shepherd by Jason Withers and while tending his flocks in the solitude of the bush, Eustace turned his attention to painting and music to while away the long and weary hours. He endeavoured to capture the spirit of the bush painting on board, canvas or tin plate, but as these materials were not always readily available he then started painting on large round eucalyptus leaves from the White and Red Box trees that grew around about him. About 1856 he painted a small picture of the famous Woolshed goldrush and during the next few years became well known in North-East Victoria. John Sadlier, a police officer stationed at Beechworth said that Eustace painted "some really exquisite scenes. He was of an easy-going dreamy temperament, a student of nature only, despising the works of men. Unfortunately his drawings were on eucalyptus leaves, the largest and roundest he could find and not on canvas, and no doubt have all perished long ago." How wrong he was. In 1876 the Melbourne Age newspaper reported, 'Eustace’s celebrated paintings on gum leaves are again attracting attention,…Mr Eustace is an elegant artist…he seems without effort to catch the colour and spirit of Australian scenery…' In 1864 A.W. Eustace held an Art Union in Albury, and again in 1884 in Ballarat. He exhibited at the Victorian Academy of Arts in 1877 and also held an exhibition of gum leaf paintings at Stevens Gallery, Melbourne in 1893. By 1896 he was receiving orders from heads of states in Europe, with his works acknowledged by Queen Victoria, Emperor Frederick of Germany and the Czar of Russia, as well as the Governors of New South Wales and Victoria. His paintings reflected his ability to paint the sky in his realistic style which is still noted by art critics of the day. A.W. Eustace was also a skillful taxidermist. The collection of birds and animals that can be seen at the Beechworth Museum are examples of his taxidermy skill. When not doing his work, painting or taxidermy, he regularly contributed letters and verse to the Chiltern newspaper, The Federal Standard. A book of verse in his hand writing was presented to The Athenaeum Trust by the Boadle family. In the 1870’s he became interested in spiritualism often being involved in lively debate at lectures and séances. By 1896 he was receiving orders from heads of states in Europe ...This is a colour photograph of a gum leaf painting that is one of many done by the well-known self-taught Australian artist Alfred William Eustace (1820-1907). A.W. Eustace, an Australian artist, was born in Berkshire, England, where he was an assistant gamekeeper to the Earl of Craven at Ashdown Park. He migrated to Australia with his wife and children in 1851 and worked on the Ullina and Eldorado Runs on the Black Dog Creek at Chiltern, which was in excess of 50,000 acres of grazing land. A.W. Eustace was also a skilful taxidermist.
