The Sunshine Technical School trade workshop was constructed in 1913. It was a foundational part of Victoria’s early technical education system and was closely tied to the industrial growth of Sunshine and the legacy of H.V. McKay’s Harvester Works. - Opened: 7 July 1913, following H.V. McKay’s donation of £2,000 and 4.5 acres on Derby Road. - Facilities: The school featured a timber administration building with six classrooms and a large, galvanized iron workshop specifically built for trade apprentices. - Purpose: Designed to train apprentices for McKay’s Sunshine Harvester Works, reflecting the industrial needs of the time. - Initial Enrollment: 70 students, including 44 apprentices from the Harvester Works.Workshop Significance - The workshop was central to the school’s mission: “mente et manibus” — “with mind and with hands.” - It provided hands-on training in mechanical and industrial trades, aligning with the Education Act 1910’s push for secondary technical education. - This made Sunshine one of the first three technical schools established under the Act, and the longest-running of them, operating until 1991. This is a Minute Book of the Warrnambool North Technical School Ladies' Auxiliary. The Minutes date from 29 May 1968 to 21 September 1977. The Warrnambool North Technical School was established in 1968 in Albert Park, Warrnambool. and continued until 1993 when it merged with Warrnambool High School to form Warrnambool College in 1994. The Ladies' Auxiliary was formed to provide greater educational facilities and amenities for the school.This Minute book is of some interest as a memento of the work of an auxiliary body connected with a Warrnambool school existing in the 20th century. This is a red hard covered Minute book with 144 lined pages with indented alphabetical tabs. The spine is torn.The Constitution is typewritten and there are hand written Minutes. Foundations for the South Wing commenced in 1872, with the front of the building completed in time for classes to begin in 1878. Many of the first boarders transferred from St Patrick’s College in East Melbourne. With the closure of St Patrick’s years later, many students, associated lay staff and Jesuits also transferred to Xavier College. Over the following century, Xavier College grew with two junior campuses; Burke Hall Campus and Kostka Hall Campus. Falls Creek Primary School Prior to 1965, couples with small children would move away from Falls Creek due to there being no school facilities in the village. In the mid 60's a few families with school age children established themselves in the village, and a need arose for a school to encourage them to stay. An enrolment of seven children and a building was required before the Education Department could become involved. The Management Committee of the day gifted the families some land (still the site of the Falls Creek Primary School No. 5067) and fundraising began. The original committee consisted of the Steven family (two children), the Lee family (three children), the Caddie family (no children), the Carroll family (no children), and the Alston family (children?). After two years of community based, yet dubious fundraising methods (including weekly gluhwein parties, keg parties and numerous raffles), enough money ($1,300) was raised and an unused SEC building in Mt Beauty was bid on and won. Due to the condition of the road up to Falls Creek, it had to be dismantled and reassembled up the mountain. Unfortunately, the building was delivered to Falls Creek too late into the season to be erected but the following summer, with no money available to hire builders, working bees began, beer was on tap, and BBQs were cooked, and a crude schoolroom with an oil heater donated by Cecil Dobson from Winterhaven was erected. The first teacher hired was an Alaskan woman who agreed to a wage of $10 per child per week. Due to minimal resources the children were sent home at different times of the day in order to warm up and have a meal. Through the winter of 1971 many government departments were lobbied and it was decided that if the building could be finished to the Education Departments standards then they would provide a government endorsed full time teacher. The three main site holders (Bob Lee, Cecil Dobson and Dick Humphries) took out a loan and the school was refurbished and opened as the 'Bob Scott Memorial Hall' in time for the 1972 season. Maree Keele was the first Head Teacher. After three years of fund raising by the school committee the hall was paid off in full. After many years in the original building the Education Department took control of the school, updated the classrooms and provided accommodation for the teachers. In 1982, discussions began surrounding construction of a 'new' Falls Creek Primary School, a joint property with the community and the Education Department. This small flag has been made by Brauer College in Warrnambool to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool and to mark the 84 years of Brauer College’s existence. Warrnambool was founded in 1847 as a planned town to provide port facilities for the export of produce of the local pastoralists and squatters. Brauer College began as the Warrnambool Technical School in 1913 with John King as the Principal and the original school buildings in Timor Street. In 1958 the school became the Warrnambool Technical College and today this site is occupied by the South West TAFE facility. The secondary school section of Warrnambool Technical College relocated to Caramut Road in Warrnambool and since 1990 has been known as Brauer College. It was named after a local prominent doctor and supporter of State Education – Dr Alfred Brauer. This flag is of some interest as a memento of Warrnambool’s 150th anniversary and of Brauer College’s part in this. This is a rectangular-shaped plastic flag attached with three metal staples to a circular-shaped wooden stick. The flag is green with white printing on both sides and contains the images of the Warrnambool City Council seal and the sea-horse emblem of Brauer College. This book gives the history of the Public Record Office, Victoria. It was written by Professor Bill Russell and produced in 2003. The research by Charlie Farrugia that enabled the book to be written was carried out entirely using the Public Record Office archives. The book documents the 1903 beginnings of the Public Record Office from a small collection in the possession of the Melbourne Public Library through to the important 1973 Victorian Public Records Act to the present day institution at North Melbourne. The Melbourne Public Library, the Historical Society of Victoria and the History School of the University of Melbourne were early contributors to the preservation of Victoria’s archives. This book is in the library of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society and is an important reference for us in regard to the history of archival preservation of historical documents in our State. In addition we are a Place of Deposit for historical records that are surplus to the requirements of the Public Record Office of Victoria and that concern more directly the history of Warrnambool and district. Many local Warrnambool and district residents use the facilities at the Public Record Office at North Melbourne and the link between that institution and Warrnambool historical groups is important. This is a hard cover book of 227 pages. The cover is black with gold lettering on the spine. The dust cover is dark red with printed material about the author and the book’s contents. The front of the dust cover has an illustration of four Victorian Railways ledgers in sepia tones and the back of the dust cover has a small illustration in brown and white of a heritage label. The book has a Contents page, an Acknowledgement page, a Foreword, an Introduction, eight chapters, Appendices, Notes and References and an Index. The book is a 2003 history of the Public Record Office of Victoria written by Professor Bill Russell and researched by Charlie Farrugia. This is the 1979 Annual Report for Lyndoch Home and Hospital for the Aged, Warrnambool. It contains lists of Board Members, a President’s Report, a sketch of a proposed new building, financial reports, photographs and a list of Life Governors. Lyndoch Home for the Aged was established in 1952 and has developed with a wide range of facilities for the aged since that date. The original Lyndoch property near the mouth of the river Hopkins was owned by a Melbourne tea merchant, George Rolfe, who bought the land when there were only on the site a couple of cottages and a larger building which had been a school, Warrnambool Grammar, run by Henry Kemmis. Rolfe acquired the land in the 1870s and named the property Lyndoch after the town in the Barossa Valley where he had lived. He owned Lyndoch for 44 years and it was his stepdaughter, Florence Lake who built in the 1920s the bungalow known as Lyndoch which forms the original building of the Lyndoch Home for the Aged. This is the 1985-6 Annual Report for Lyndoch Home and Hospital for the Aged, Warrnambool. It contains lists of Board Members, a President’s Report, photographs, Lyndoch’s Aims, financial reports and a list of Life Governors. Lyndoch Home for the Aged was established in 1952 and has developed with a wide range of facilities for the aged since that date. The original Lyndoch property near the mouth of the River Hopkins was owned by a Melbourne tea merchant, George Rolfe, who bought the land when there were on the site only a couple of cottages and a larger building which had been a school, Warrnambool Grammar, run by Henry Kemmis. Rolfe acquired the land in the 1870s and named the property Lyndoch after the town in the Barossa Valley where he had lived. He owned Lyndoch for 44 years ad it was his stepdaughter Florence Lake who built in the 1920s the bungalow known as Lyndoch which forms the original building of Lyndoch Home for the Aged. Today the facility is called Lyndoch Living. This cookery book was produced in 2014 as a school fundraiser. It was purchased at Allansford Cheese World in January 2015 for $15. Allansford school was established as a National School in 1856 on land reserved for the purpose by John McMahon Allan. It comprised two sandstone classrooms -one for boys and one for girls -with an attached pise teacher's residence. In 1872 when the Victorian Education Department was set up existing schools were listed in alphabetical order and given a number. Allansford State School was No.3. The school was enlarged in the late 1800s and again in the early 1920s. In 1994 following the amalgamation of the Allansford, Allans Forest and Naringal schools a new school was built which adjoined the existing buildings. The old buildings were refurbished as administration and staff facilities. John McMahon Allan settled in the area in 1839 with his brother William Osborne Allan. They were the sons of David Allan, Deputy Commissary General during Macquarie's term of government. The brothers divided the station with William retaining the Allandale portion and John naming his portion Tooram. John McMahon Allan was president of the early district Roads Board. In an attempt to recoup some of the heavy losses due to the disastrous Bateman fire of 1854 John subdivided a portion of Tooram at the Hopkins River crossing known as Allans ford.
