Details of 15 soldiers from the Greensborough district who lost their lives in World War 1. With photos of some of Leigh Conkie's chainsaw sculptures, and of the Greensborough War Memorial (Fallen Soldier's Memorial) first erected in Main Street in 1919, now in the Greensborough War Memorial Park. Plaque commemorating the opening of War Memorial Park Greensborough in 1994. The plaque reads: "Shire of Diamond Valley. Cr David Hay Shire President and the Central Riding Councillors Cr Ian Macarthur Wallace and Cr Leslie John Smith on 24 August 1994 dedicated this monument to the men and women of Diamond Valley who served their country in times of conflict. With the centenary of World War 1, members of the Greensborough Historical Society researched the local lads who signed up to serve in the Great War. We have included Nurses from the area and those who served at Mont Park. The Greensborough and district soldiers listed in the World War I Project all had a connection with the area. Names have been taken from the Fallen Soldier’s Memorial, Greensborough Primary School Honour Board, the Greensborough District Honour Board housed at the RSL and by searching through Australian War Memorial and National Archives of Australia records. Some of our soldiers settled in and made great contributions to life in Greensborough after the War. Articles are also available on the GHS website. Descendants or relatives with further information are urged to contact the Society. Family stories and photographs would be appreciated. Suggestions for additions to the list are most welcome.
