The TAGHEUER company was established by Edouard Heuer in 1860 n St-Imier, Switzerland. He patented his first chronograph or timepiece in 1882. The company has operated continuously from that time. In the early 1970s, Heuer’s Electronics Division developed the Centigraph, a timing system initially used by the Ferrari racing team. This system allowed times to be recorded to 1/1000 second. It was also capable of timing multiple cars or competitors, with the number of laps, the time of the last lap and total time, being printed out on the spot. This system has been adapted and used in a range of sports including numerous World Ski Championships and the Winter Olympic Games. The TAGHAEUR system has been certified by the FIS (Fédération Internationale de Ski). TAGHEUER ceased production of their sports timing systems at the end of 2020. This suit was owned by Steve Lee, a three time Australian Olympian who competed at Sarajevo 1984, Calgary 1988 and Albertville 1992. He also achieved 1st in the Furano World Cup Super G in 1985. Steve Lee grew up in Falls Creek and had skis on his feet when he was just two years old. He later became a member of the Falls Creek Race Club and at the age of 14 won State and National Junior titles. After repeated success, Steve was selected to race overseas in the Australian Junior team. He won the Australian Open Championship at the age of 17. For 10 years, Steve never missed a race in the World Cup Circuit. Overall, He claimed 20 top 15 finishes in Downhill, Super-G and combined events. Towards the end of his career Lee swapped the World Cup circuit for the World Pro Tour in the USA, winning the Pro Downhill Tour ‘King of the Mountain’ title. He was also running a photography business in Falls Creek and was also involved in sports commentating on Australian television. This included commentating Alpine Freestyle events at four Winter Olympics and several World Championships. Steve co-founded Chill Factor Ski magazine and spent a decade as a National Selector and President of Falls Creek Race Club. He also became involved in movies, working with Roger Moore and Jackie Chan as a stuntman. Britteny (Britt) Cox was born in Wodonga, Victoria in 1994. She grew up skiing alpine and mogul events on the slopes of Falls Creek. In 2004 she competed in her first International Ski Federation (FIS) event at Mt. Buller. At Vancouver 2010, 15-year-old Britt made history as the youngest Australian to compete at a Winter Olympic Games. She went on to compete at Sochi 2014, PyeongChang 2018 and Beijing 2022, despite breaking six ribs and a collarbone in a crash in 2019. In 2012, she was awarded an Australia Sport Hall of Fame scholarship. Her major breakthrough came in 2016/17 season when she took seven victories and two third place finishes to win the moguls as well as the overall freestyle World Cup titles, thus becoming the first Australian woman to win the Crystal Globe in moguls. She finished off a highly successful campaign by winning the World Championship title in Sierra Nevada. Ross Milne grew up on his family's tobacco property in Myrtleford, Victoria and started skiing at Falls Creek when he was 13. He went on to win the North-Eastern District Ski Association (NEDSA) Junior Championships for three years in a row. In 1961 Ross was a member of the Australian team which competed against New Zealand in the Inter-Dominion Championships. In 1963, he won the Downhill and Alpine Combined title at the Australian Championships, while placing second in the Grand Slalom event. Ross Milne was selected in the Australian team that participated in the 1964 Olympic Winter Games at Innsbruck, Austria. A few days before the opening of the Games, on 25 January 1964, he tragically lost his life when he crashed into a tree during a training run for the Men's Downhill. He was only 19 years of age. Team Red were the original free riders from Falls Creek who focused on freestyle skiing rather than more traditional downhill skiing. They trained to compete in the tough freestyle circuit. Over the years members have included: Eric Hymans, twice Australian Mogul Champion: Lyn Gross, Australian Aerial Champion and World Cup finalist; Kate Stevens twice Australian Mogul Champion; Kent Dowding. Ski-Horizon is the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs which began publication in 1949. The were 26 original member clubs which included Albury Ski Club, Bogong Ski Club, Myrtleford Ski Club, Tallangatta and District Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club. Two pioneers of Falls Creek, Tom Mitchell, M.L.A., and Martin Romuld were Vice-Presidents of the Federation.This Journal is significant because it documents the early development of skiing in Victoria.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Attunga Ski Lodge was built by Bob and Noelene Lee in 1968. They had managed club and commercial lodges, including Ripparoo, throughout the early 60s before building their own premises. Three generations of the family have lived and worked in Falls Creek. As stated in this brochure, Attunga derives from the aboriginal word meaning High Place. Attunga was the first lodge in Falls Creek to have en suite rooms. It has continued to be a family-run and focused business, being purchased in 2016 by the Wruck family. Bob and Noelene Lee's son, Steven, became a three-time Olympian (in 1984, 1988 and 1992) and a World Cup winner. Adrian Costa is the second of four brothers who grew up at Falls Creek, attended school there and at Mt Beauty and were members of the Falls Creek Race Club. He started skiing at the age of three. Costa started competing in moguls around age 16 and ‘specialised’ in this field two years later. In 1991 he entered in the International Youth Championships in Le Sauze, where he finished second. His impressive career included competing in the World Cup from 1992 until 2003, representing Australia in the Winter Olympics in 1992 Albertville, 1994 Lillehammer, 1998 Nagano and in 2002 Salt Lake City where he was given the honour of carrying the Australian Flag in the Opening Ceremony. In total, Adrian Costa made 126 World Cup starts between 1991 and 2003, placing 31 times in the top-10 and seven times in the top-5. Paul Costa is the eldest of four brothers who grew up at Falls Creek, attended school there and at Mt Beauty and were members of the Falls Creek Race Club. These were the official Australian team's sunglasses issued to competitors at the Winter Olympic Games at Lillehammer, Norway in 1994. The glasses belonged to Paul and Adrian Costa however they could not wear them because the Costa brothers were sponsored by Oakley at that time. The four Costa brothers - Paul, Adrian, Simon and Tom - all skied for Australia in mogul and freestyle competitions. They attended school at Falls Creek and Mt Beauty and were members of the Falls Creek Race Club. Paul’s first major event at the age of 16 was the Falls Creek Summit Masters, where he finished second in the Open Class. In 1993 he placed fourth at the FIS Freestyle World Championships in Austria. He was selected to represent Australia at the Lillehammer Winter Olympic Games in 1994. After these Games, Paul ended his competitive career and took up coaching junior teams and was a member of the coaching staff for the 2006 Torino Olympics. Falls Creek featured several new programs and activities in 2010. Australia's ultimate skiing tour was launched with Back Country Tours guided by Steve Lee, Falls Creek's most famous local and Australian Olympian. The full length of Wombats Ramble was also lined with lights to provide night skiing and boarding on Wednesday and Saturday nights throughout the season. Pete the Big Blue Dragon was also a Falls Creek celebrity and had his own weekly stage show at the Village Bowl and often frequented the Fox Trail Terrain Park. He also had his own website full of games, stories, merchandise and a snow safety video. 2010 also saw the introduction of the Snow Rewards Loyalty Program. Members had access to cheaper Lift Passes and a range of exclusive discounts at both Falls Creek and Hotham.
