This is a biography of Price Warung by Barry Andrews. Price Warung (1854-1911), whose real name was William Astley, has a place in Australia’s history as a journalist, writer and campaigner for Federation. He worked for a great number of newspapers throughout Australia and began an association with the Sydney ‘Bulletin’ in 1890. At this time he wrote the powerful works for which he is best remembered – ‘Convict Days’, four volumes of stories about Australia’s convict period. The major theme of these stories is the sordid nature of the convict system. Astley became heavily involved with the Federation campaign, firstly as the Secretary of the Bathurst Federal League and then as the organizing Secretary of the 1896 Bathurst Convention. This convention is considered by historians to have given the Federation campaign a new and vigorous vitality. In 1898 Astley wrote most of the official articles publicizing the ‘Yes’ vote in the Federation referendum. Astley lived and worked in Warrnambool in 1883/4 (for about twelve months) as a journalist for the Warrnambool ‘Standard’. This book is of great interest as it documents the life of Price Warung (William Astley) who features in the history of Warrnambool journalism as an Australian writer of note who also wrote for the Warrnambool Standard. Examples of Astley’s journalism can be found in the Warrnambool Standards of 1883/4. He wrote lengthy articles in a free-flowing and attractive but verbose style. His two articles on the well-known horse stud and hop farm called ‘Bryan O’Lynn’ appeared in the Standard in October 1884. This is a hard cover book of 197 pages. It has a dark green cover with an image of a world globe and a Pegasus on the front. The printed title, the author’s name and the images are in gold print. The cover has a plastic overlay and a library label had been mostly removed from the bottom section of the spine. The book has notes on the author, a photograph of Price Warung, a Preface, Acknowledgements, Chronology, eight chapters on Price Warung, Notes and References, a Bibliography and an Index. This set of books was given to Cornelius (Con) O’Mahony in 1883 when he won the Bowen Prize Essay Competition awarded by the University of Melbourne. The Bowen Prize was established in 1874 by the Governor of Victoria, Sir George Bowen. This was then awarded annually to the person who was a student or ex-student of the University of Melbourne who wrote the best essay on matters relating to British and British Empire history or literature. Con O’Mahony’s essay was on the Federation of the Australian Colonies. Con O’Mahony, born in Bendigo, studied at Melbourne University in the early 1880s. He was a lawyer in Kepler Street, Warrnambool from the late 1880s to his death in 1920, firstly in partnership with E. Klingender and later operating under the name of O’Mahony and Murray. These books are most important because: 1. They are a very attractive set of books with considerable antiquarian value. 2. They were given as the prize for winning the 1883 Bowen Prize at Melbourne University – a prestigious award still today. 3. They were given for a prize-winning essay on the advantages of Federation in Australia. The essay was written 17 years before Federation and so they forms an interesting part of the Australia-wide campaign for Federation. 4. The prize books were awarded to Con O’Mahony who played his part in Warrnambool’s late 19th century and early 20th century history as a prominent lawyer in the town for over 30 years.These ten volumes of books have hard covers in a dark red colour with a gold leather spine and leather reinforcements on the edges of the front and back covers. The front cover has an embossed gold emblem of the University of Melbourne and the spine has ornamental gold, black and red patterning and gold lettering. The insides of the cover have blue, red and orange mottled patterning and this is repeated on the edging of the pages. There are approximately 400 pages in each volume. A typed page on the Bowen Prize is inserted in the front of the first volume and the inscription on every volume is handwritten in black ink. The covers are a little scuffed and slightly torn in some volumes. The essay pasted into this booklet was originally produced in a newspaper (name unknown). The original essay was written by Cornelius (Con) O’Mahony and in 1883 it won the Bowen Prize Essay Competition for the best essay written by a student or past student of the University of Melbourne. It was written 17 years before Federation came into being by Con O’Mahony, a person who also played a part in Warrnambool’s history as a prominent lawyer in the town for over 30 years. This is a soft cover booklet of 24 pages. The cover is brown with black print and has handwritten material written over the original printing on the front cover. The booklet, originally an insurance booklet, has a stamp and typed material (a Federation essay) cut out and pasted onto 17 of the original pages. The booklet was originally stapled but the staples have been removed. The cover is partly torn and detached from the pages. This wooden box was possibly a plain brown box which has been hand decorated with shells and pieces of glass. It might have been stored on a mantelpiece or dressing table and was used to store "bits and pieces". The Australian Natives' Association (ANA), a mutual society was founded in Melbourne, Australia in April 1871 as the Victorian Natives' Association. In 1872 it voted to extend membership to men born in the other Australian colonies and changed its name at the same time. The Association played a leading role in the movement for Australian federation in the last 20 years of the 19th century. In 1900 it had a membership of 17,000, mainly in Victoria. The ANA provided sickness, medical and funeral cover. Membership in the ANA was restricted to men born in Australia.The ANA consisted mainly of energetic middle-class men aged under 50. In 1880 the ANA committed itself to the federation of the Australian colonies, and provided much of the organisational and financial support for the Federation Leagues which led the campaign, particularly in Victoria. The Hall Cherokee II glider is an American design for amateur construction from plans. The designer was Stan Hall (1915-2009), a professional engineer, who gained extensive experience in the United States aviation industry during World War 2 including the programs for military gliders. He continued to work as an engineer for aircraft manufacturers and as a consultant to the industry after the war. He was active in gliding and, in particular, the home built sailplane movement. The Cherokee II was one of about 10 glider designs that he produced: it came out in 1956. It is understood that over 100 Cherokee gliders have been built. In Australia the number is possibly 10 or 11. The Hall Cherokee VH-GVO was built by R.D Meares of Caringbah, New South Wales. The glider was registered as VH-GVO on 11 October 1973 and given serial number “GFA-HB-82” by the Gliding Federation of Australia. The Logbook for VH-GVO appears to be a complete record of the flying history; in aggregate 210 hours 40 minutes in the air from 331 flights. The first test hop occurred on 29 July 1972 at Camden, New South Wales. VH-GVO was last flown on 22 July 1986. Many of the flights recorded are of one or two hours duration. The glider was last inspected and certified as airworthy and in a reasonable condition at the Hunter Valley Gliding Club in July 1986. Since that time, until transferred to the Australian Gliding Museum, the glider was in storage. Structural restoration work has been completed on the fuselage and one wing. However, inspection of the other wing revealed extensive damage to the ribs and spars and consequently a decision was taken to make it a static exhibit. The exhibit is an example of home built construction of a type that has proved popular amongst amateur glider builders.The Hall Cherokee (formerly registered as VH-GVO) is a single seat wooden home built glider. The glider is constructed from wood, plywood, fabric and metal fittings, all commercial grade except for main wing fittings, pulleys, cables and bolts. The fuselage is simple with four main longerons and bulkheads with diagonal bracing. The wing has two identical solid spars which form a geodetic structure, hence the leading edge is non-structural. The sculptor of the Shakespeare sculpture was Andor Meszaros of Kew, Melbourne. The unveiling was undertaken by Mayor Arthur W. Nicholson. The statue was presented by L.F. North, general Manager of the Fidelity Trustee Company Limited, representing the late H.P. Stevens as one of the benefactors whose generosity enabled the Statue to be erected. The "portrait statue" shows how people saw Shakespeare as he wanted to be seen; as author-actor bowing to the applause. His position implies modesty, the knowledge of his own worth; majesty. his movement is at once humble and royal. The statue was positioned so people approaching or leaving Ballarat Civic Hall will see the statue full face, and the bowing attitude enables them to continue to study the face even from a few feet distant. The base in in the form of an Elizabethan stage, and is designed so that its sides correspond to the existing angles of its position. The proposal to erect a Statue of Shakespeare in Ballarat stemmed from a movement in 1889, when a committee was formed and a meeting held to inaugurate the proposal. At the initial meeting 258 pounds was contributed to the fund, which was later built on by further donations. In 1935 the fund stood at 945 pounds. In 1939 a bequest of 100 pounds was received from the estate of the late Frank Gale. In October 1952, the Fidelity trustee Company Limited notified of an extract of the will of Harry Person Stevens, in which be bequeathed the sum of 2,000 pounds to the fund for the erection of a Statue of William Shakespeare. In 1957 it was felt the fund had accumulated to an amount sufficient to carry out the intentions of the fund. at that stage the money in hand was approximately 4,000 pounds.A small committee was appointed to further the proposal. In May 1959 a panel of adjudicators met to determine the winner of a limited competition amongst sculptors. The committee comprised Cr G.L. Scott, Cr K.C. Webb, Cr W.E. Roff, J.H. Heinz representing the Fidelity Trustee Company Limited, and R.P. Evans of the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery. Norma Redpath, the nominee of the Victorian Sculptors' Society was present in the capacity of an adviser. The Salisbury Clock Tower was built in memory of Arabella Roberts who died on 23 January 1892. The firm Smith of Derby installed the illuminated clock mechanism with four faces and was still responsible for maintenance when, in December 1970, it replaced the original gravity mechanism with a more modern movement. The original clock mechanism was sold to a customer in Providence, USA. In 1997, the new mechanism was completely refurbished and updated to include automatic adjustment for British Summer Time. At the same time the tower itself was restored, the main contractors for this work being R. Moulding and Co of South Newton. Smith of Derby continues to be responsible for maintaining the clock, and so this firm has now been providing a service to the City for over 100 years.
