These three flour bags belonged to Helena Warren (nee McKeown) who was a self-taught photographer who became the local press correspondent and producer of postcard images. She was married to William John warren and lived in Newmerella. Flour bags were used for bulk purchases of flour in early to mid 20th century. They would have been laundered and re-used for storage. In earlier times empty flour bags were washed and boiled and then made into tea towels or children’s bloomers, or underwear. The flour bags are good examples of packaging and design for Australian produce which sold across Australia and overseas in the mid 20th century. Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence of the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold on which a built structure was subsequently constructed as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens.A subdivision in what is currently Balwyn, but which was advertised as being in Camberwell North. The subdivision included six allotments facing Buchanan Avenue and Houghton Street. The subdivision was to the east of the Pointed Firs Estate (1936). In addition to the intrinsic value of this subdivision plan, it also reveals information about the development of transport infrastructure in this area. Edward Haughton & Co, in promoting the Osburn Heights Estate in what is now Balwyn North, attempted to capitalize on the subdivision’s proximity to East Kew. One section of the plan is includes the text: ‘The New Suburb: Camberwell North or East Kew (the names are synonymous)’. The Osburn Heights subdivision was part of a series of subdivisions running between Doncaster Road and Maud Street, including the ‘Pointed Firs Estate’ (MAP.0010). The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers and McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. A number of the latter are by noted photographers such as J.E. Barnes.An almost identical plan of the ‘Pointed Firs Estate’ is in the State Library of Victoria. The plan unusually uses a photograph to show the panoramic views from the Estate. A prospective purchaser could expect to look across the Yarra Valley to Eaglemont and Heidelberg. The Baptist Chapel was first opened in March 1868 in Lerderderg Street, Bacchus Marsh, next to State School No. 28. The plans were prepared by James G. Pippett and the building was constructed by bricklayer J.F.Taylor and carpenter W. Nelson. When fire threatened its destruction in 1871, the townspeople assisted in saving the building by tearing off the roof and removing windows and flooring. Subsequently it was found that a solid silver Communion Service was missing as well as the contents of the Poor Box. The Chapel was renovated and used until 1898 when the building was moved to Main Street, next to the Post Office. Two rooms were added at the front when the building was rebuilt. It was demolished in 1985.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the Jeremeas Family Album, which contains photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll. The photograph is of a substantial brick building with a shingle roof. The gable above the front entrance and the side of the building under the guttering are ornamented with rows of bricks laid horizontally. A round window sits in the centre of the gable. The central door and the front and side sash windows are topped by semi-circular brick arches. The ornamentation is continued with contrasting bricks down the corners of the building.
