The Warrnambool Fire Brigade was formed in 1863. The first fire engine house was in Liebig Street and carters were required to carry water to fire scenes. In 1889 the Council built a new Fire Station on Liebig Street and Warrnambool hosted its own Annual Demonstration in 1894. In 1891 the volunteer brigade became part of the Country Fire Brigade. The Fire Station relocated to Raglan Parade in 1915 and then to Timor Street in 1961. In 1989 the Brigade moved back to Raglan Parade. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade was formed in 1863 with the first fire engine house in Liebig Street. Since then the brigade has been situated in Raglan Parade, Timor Street and today is in Mortlake Road. Fire Brigade demonstrations were a feature of rural Fire Brigades, particularly in the 19th century. At these demonstrations firemen from all over the state were involved in competition using hose reels, pumps and ladders etc. A torch light procession was always part of the demonstration. The state Fire Brigade Demonstration was held in Warrnambool in March 1929. One hundred and nineteen teams entered the Champion Fours and there were ninety one entrants in the one man ladder competition which was won by a fireman from Carrum who was carried shoulder high around the oval. This badge has considerable significance as it is our only memento of the Fire Brigade demonstration held in Warrnambool in 1929. A gold coloured metal badge featuring a profile of a fireman's helmet at the top, a horizontal bar, ornate capital Letters; C F B painted ( the letter F is missing some paint ) in the centre and a dark blue scroll with text at the base. This set of 16 photos of the Christmas Children’s Party were taken in the and the grounds of Fortuna, Army Survey Regiment in 1992. The Christmas party was an annual event enjoyed by the soldiers’ families, featuring amusements such as the ‘pig train’ and pony rides, a historic fire engine provided by the Golden Square Fire Brigade with Santa on board and refreshments such as cordial, lollies, ice creams and fairy floss. Single members readily volunteered to assist in the running of the party. An occasional highlight was displays of military hardware such as tanks and APC from the Puckapunyal’s Armoured Centre. Catering staff/contractors taking a break outside the kitchen are also featured in this collection. The Army Survey Regiment Wives Club was instrumental in establishing the Tennis Hut, featuring in photos .1P to .5P. The Wives Club initiated many social events. Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection, including a series of photos of buildings in High Street (formerly Sydney Road), Wodonga. The CWA Hall officially opened in 1938 having been built on land granted by the Wodonga Council. Wodonga Infant Welfare Centre also occupied part of the building until 1959. Last meeting of the CWA in that hall was in held in December 1983, with the Council resuming ownership of the land to build the current day Post Office. Country Fire Brigade’s new fire station opened in High Street on 31st March 1940. The building comprised an appliance room for housing the fire engine and plant. The floor had been especially treated to enable dancing when the occasion warranted. There was a meeting room, a station-keeper’s bedroom and a repair shop. A shower room and modern kitchen were also included. The Fire station relocated to Smythe and Stanley Street corner which opened in 1977. Gould manufacturing company was founded in 1848 at Seneca Falls, New York when Seabury S. Gould purchased an interest in Downs, Mynderse & Co. and the firm became Downs & Co. Wooden pumps were produced at the time in an old cotton factory building. In 1869, the name of the company was changed from Downs & Company to Goulds Manufacturing Company. Seabury S. Gould was regarded as a man of unusual vision, and as the founder of Goulds Manufacturing Company he was keen to start producing cast iron pumps. An iron pump, he believed, would overcome all the disadvantages of a wooden pump. It would be strong and efficient and provide fresh flowing water for the pioneers. He ran the company until after the American Civil War and because Goulds Manufacturing had a foundry, they also produced all kinds of cast iron products such as corn shellers, bells, sad irons, sinks, tools, and a line of fire engines. From 1848 to 1964 a Gould family member had always been President of the company. However, the company ownership in 1964 was transferred from family-owned stock to public offerings and employee ownership of stock. The subject item called the "N e w Deluge" was an improved bilge pump for vessels having not more than 25 feet depth of hold. It was also used by contractors for pumping out excavations and was well adapted for irrigation use. This hand pump was designed to be used where a hand pump of large capacity was desired. Goulds made many different types of pumps to suit differing pumping situations such as. Well Pumps, Hydraulic Rams, Diaphragm Pumps, Tank Pumps, Sprayers and Small Capacity Power rumps.
