The flag project was initiated by the Brighton Cemetorians in conjunction with Southern Metropoloitan Cemeteries Trust. An Australian Flag is placed at the foot of the Brighton Cememetry graves of Australian servicemen and women, prior to ANZAC Day and Rememberance Day to publicly commerorate the role theses people had in representing Australia as part of the war effort. St Andrews Primary School was one of thirteen primary schools and one high school to participate in the banner project. The 'As We Are' Community Banner Project was the first major Community Arts project initiated and co-ordinated through the resources of the Shire of Eltham. It was originally conceived and inspired by a local textile artist, Tracey Naughton, who, together with the Community Services Manager of this local government council, made the idea a very concrete and flourishing reality. The project grew from the original fourteen or so intending participant groups to fifty-seven banners; expressions of those diverse groups' interests and identities. As a first major project it was rightly felt by Tracey Naughton, who became the Shire's first Community Arts Officer in March 1985, that it should be fully documented, so that an appraisal of the extensive growth of this community arts development process could be assessed. Given the time and money available to do this, Jacky Talbot, and her advisors, decided it was appropriate to select fifteen or twenty banners for detailed analysis. This was done by taping interviews with members of the chosen groups. The groups were chosen to cover all ages participating, from the toddlers in the Playhouse to our grand elder citizens in their Nursing Horne, and to cover a wide range of different types of groups - schools, scouts, churches, youth issue based, and the numerous women's groups of various combinations, localities and concerns. ·. Some groups who presented their banners for the culminating highlight of this project - the Exhibition, held at the Eltham Community Centre on October 9th, 1986, had no contact with the Shire or project co-ordinator, but heard about the project through the local news' networks or other participants. It is an obelisk of Harcourt granite in the rough, bearing an appropriate inscription and 27 names—an unpretentious monument by the wayside, which will stand for all time silently expressing the appreciation of the living for the sacrifice of the dead. The Eureka Stockade was fought on the Eureka Lead, Ballarat East on 03 December 1854. Keith Rash was a signwriter who learnt his trade at the Ballarat School of Mines. He was very interested in local history and wrote articles for the local newspapers. The clippings on Eureka would have been used to inform his articles, and research on the site of the Eureka Stockade. Ken Clements was former Academic Registrar at Ballarat College of Advanced Education (now University of Ballarat). He was a committee member of the Eureka Stockade Memorial Park Committee for a number of years. Dr Dorothy Wickham has researched Eureka over a number of decades, and has published a number of titles on the topic. Clare Gervasoni has researched Eureka over a number of decades, and has published a number of titles on the topic, including coordination of www.Eurekapedia.org for Ballarat Reform League Inc. Published caption: Thousands of men and women marched in the Eucharistic procession yesterday which brought the Congress to a close. The picture above shows the procession headed by the Children of Mary in Bourke-street and turning into Spring-street, in front of Parlia ment House. Right (top) — The procession leaving the starting point at St. Patrick's Cathedral and below, the Papal Legate carrying the Host under a canopy borne by a guard of laymen and preceded by white-clad girls scattering rose leaves, incense bearers and the Papal Chamberlains in their Spanish uniforms. The end of the procession in front of Mount St. Evin’s Hospital from which the final benediction was given by Cardi nal MacRory from an altar on the bal cony. The Papal Legate carrying the Host is passing through the assemblage of surpliced priests. An initiative of the Roman Catholic Church, it was their contribution to Melbourne’s Centenary Celebrations. 200,000 Catholics resided in Melbourne at this time – one quarter of the city’s population. While the Congress was aimed at Catholics, and acted as an opportunity to reinforce their living faith and homage, it contained a variety of events of splendour, solemnity and significance designed to appeal to Melbournians, and would additionally provide incentive for people to travel to Victoria, thereby creating an economic benefit to the state. The Procession of the Blessed Sacrament concluded the week-long Congress. Commencing at St Patrick’s Cathedral, it covered a two-mile route via Gisborne, Collins, Elizabeth and Bourke streets, then to Victoria Parade, where a final benediction was pronounced by Cardinal MacRory from the balcony of Mount St. Evin’s Hospital (today the site of St Vincent’s Private Hospital). An estimated 100,000 took part. Onlookers line Swanston Street, some standing at the entrance to Tate’s Tea House – a well-known Melbourne landmark located in the basement of the Manchester Unity Building. This is the afternoon procession concluding the Catholic Church’s National Eucharistic Congress in Melbourne - a procession of the Blessed Eucharist through the Melbourne city. It commenced at St Patrick’s Cathedral, and covered a two mile route via Gisborne, Collins, Elizabeth and Bourke streets, then to Victoria Parade where a final benediction was pronounced by the Cardinal from the balcony of Mount St. Evin’s Hospital (present day St Vincent’s Private Hospital). The Children of Mary Sodalities was a religious body which aimed at fostering in its members an ardent devotion, reverence, and filial love towards the Blessed Virgin Mary, initially embracing the pupils and orphans of the schools and institutions of the Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul. In 1847, Blessed Pius IX affiliated them to the Jesuit Roman Sodality. They were distinguished by a medal suspended from a blue ribbon, and once a fully-fledged a Child of Mary wore a distinctive blue cape. On the extreme right foreground of the photo can be seen an intriguing piece of artistic design – a tiered pole. Tiger Goal-Sneak snags third major DICK HARRIS (548 goals, 5th highest Richmond FC of all time, 196 games) scores a trademark goal from the forward pocket, despite the attentions of JACK REGAN (future fullback on Collingwood Team of the Century). A future Richmond FC Hall of Famer, Harris, described by teammate Jack “Captain Blood” Dyer as the “toughest little player I have ever seen”, is ably assisted by Tiger followers, baker DAVE BASSETT (46 games in 3 seasons until forced to retire with a back injury), and fireman BERT FOSTER (133 games,12 seasons, died on duty in 1941). Accompanying our photograph is a series of five sequential images taken by The Globe High Speed Camera of the same on-field action from the same location. These images appeared four days later on the front page of the midweek Melbourne Sporting Globe (photographer unknown). If ya don’t mind, umpire?? The ball and the umpire are nowhere in sight as Richmond FC’s greatest goal scorer (and champion ballroom dancer), the always chatty publican, JACK “SKINNY” TITUS (970 goals, 294 games), reaches into his bottomless bag of sneaky tricks, and appears to be infringing Collingwood FC fullback, JACK “SNOZZLE” REGAN! It was a bad day at the office for the Tigers, and for the talkative “Skinny”. He scored six of the Tigers’ 10 goals, but Regan was mentioned in every post-game wrap-up as one of the outstanding players afield. “Snozzle” went on to win the Magpies’ 1936 Best and Fairest trophy by the narrowest of margins, no doubt helped by the votes he received in this game. I’m tipping this is one thing you wouldn’t have heard Skinny yapping about! GO THE PUNCH, SHEAHAN, YA LEGEND!!! MAURIE SHEAHAN, 121-game Tiger fullback and member of the “Three Musketeers” Defensive Line, tries to punch the ball, preventing Gordon “Nuts” Coventry from marking and scoring another of his eight goals for the afternoon! In his 17th season, “Nuts” was giving a by now familiar hands-on demonstration of why, 87 years later, the Coventry name should be forever emblazoned behind the Northern goal of Docklands Stadium. Another Musketeer, Richmond’s 12-season, 209-game Life Member, tough KEVIN O’NEILL (left), waits hopefully for any crumbs. DANNY GUINAINE, a rugged Tigers utility player who played 10 seasons and 110 games, is also on the scene. Maurie’s son John played 17 games, and Danny’s son Paddy played 146 games at Punt Road in the 1960s, proving again that Tiger blood will always be thicker than water. Book presented to the Museum from Tatura RSL showing the work that went into creating the Tatura Water Tower Mural. The Water tower on the north side, depict a full size picture of Sir John Monash in uniform. The south side of the tower depicts a thread of poppies. Sir John was the engineer who designed the water tower which was opened in 1912. A letter from Tatura RSL is in the book.White hard covered book. Front has two pictures of a water tower. Victorias first quarantine station was established in Port Ormond on 24 April 1840 when the government immigrant ship "Glen Huntley" arrived in the Port Phillip District flying the yellow quarantine flag . The site is marked by a cairn and plaque that was unveiled in 1985. In 1990 a second plaque was affixed to the cairn to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the ship. The site became St Kilda's first official burial ground and the graves of the early colonists remained here until 1898 when the remains were re-interred in the St Kilda Cemetery. Unveiled by the Hon.
