FLEMING, Lawrence Joseph, (b.1876 - d. 1967) Police Reg. No. 5974 served with the Emerald Police from 08/11/1915 - 06/09/1934 as 1st. Constable. Lawrence Joseph Fleming was a veteran of the Boer War. He came to Emerald after his discharge from the Australian Army. He joined the police force, travelling on horseback to cover an area from Gembrook, Cockatoo and Emerald, through to Monbulk and Belgrave. His house which also served as the police station still exists in Kilvington Drive, Emerald. The back yard contained a lock-up for prisoners. He served as a policeman in Emerald for 19 years. When he retired, around 1928 - 30, Constable Fleming bought the Collis farm in Pinnocks Road, which at the time extended right down to Telopea Road. He died in Ferntree Gully hospital at the age of 91 years on the 12 June 1967. (as researched by C. This photograph was taken at what is now 14 Kilvington Drive, across the road from Emerald Scout Hall and at the corner with Benson Street. Constable Lawrence Joseph Fleming (1876-1967), the house's occupant, worked in the district for 19 years from November 1915 until his retirement in June 1934. He was a respected local figure, with tributes given by other local figures when he retired. While this house is discussed as belonging to Constable Fleming, Fleming himself lived in the old police station further up Kilvington Drive. This house was occupied separately by his wife Jessie Fleming for many years, and she may be one of the women in the photographz. According to Graeme Legge, Constable Fleming's distinctive white horse inspired the name for Whitehorse Road; this story is apocryphal, as Whitehorse Road is generally agreed to have been named for the White Horse Hotel, which was named for the horse of a Captain Elgar local to the Box Hill area.Constable Fleming was a significant and respected figure in the Emerald community for many years; this home was not his main residence, but was an important part of his family's life.This item is a sepia photograph mounted on card. John Fleming and his wife, May built this business from a 'ham and beef shop' to a more modern delicatessen from c 1930 until the 1950s. May and her mother, Mrs Ethel Pallisser, cooked 'potted meats', pies and rissoles. John cooked and boned the bacon and other meats. They also sold Herbert Adams cakes which were delivered in large slabs from which John cut into one and two pound pieces. Initially the shop had counters which they replaced with glass cases. The Flemings lived at the shop until the accommodation became too cramped. John Barry Fleming (1912-2010) married Ethel May Palliser (1915-1997) in 1938. Prior to marriage, May lived with her parents: father Henry or Harry Palliser, a bricklayer, and Ethel nee Johnson in Norfolk Road. This item represents one of the most important spiritual references available to a settler in countryside Australia in the period 1800s to 1900s. This is the family bible and relates to the major religious beliefs of the early settlers who pioneered British/European colonial settlements. Although the first pages are missing the family name is written on the inside cover (J.A. Fleming). Most of these bibles (of this era) showed the family genealogical record of births, baptism and deaths, however this bible has the relevant pages missing. This bible would have provided the spiritual strength needed in bad times. Throughout this bible there are copies of specially commissioned lithographic engravings, each published between March 1812 to December 1813. These photographs were provided to visualise the theme of the each chapter.This item is significant because it shows that spiritualism of a small group (family in this case) is a vital part of the cohesive forces which holds a family(the basic subgroup of society) together, against all odds, and external pressures. It demonstrates that even in isolated or sparsely populated areas, the mores of a christian community is as strong as that of the cities. Mountains (Victorian Alps) have throughout the enlightened Ages been of extreme spiritual significance and this beholds those who live in this area.The families in the Kiewa Valley fall into the "isolated rural area" when this bible was first in use. This bible contains as its introduction,scripture history starting from 4004 BC "God created all things" to 2900 AD end of the World. There is a high degree of probability that this bible belonged to a member or members of the John Ambrose Flemming extended family who resided in the Kiewa Valley. J.A. Flemming (a famous English electrical engineer and physicist) invented the first diode in 1904). He and his family were devout Christians and he helped establish the Evolution Protest Movement.Leather bound bible. Leather in some areas is in tatters revealing the thick multi-layered cardboard backing. Front and back covers are held together by the thin leather binding. The lettering of the bible is large.Hand written inscriptions are in ink on the inside front cover, " J Tangam" at the top, "J A Fleming" underneath "Tangambalanga" and below that "1900". There are penciled dates "1937 1900" which have at one point in time been scribbled over in pencil. Although not marked on cover, the bible was known as "Brown's Bible" after the Author, the Rev. John Brown. Grave of John Fleming (died 8/6/1945) in Plot# P9 Greensborough Cemetery. Greensborough Cemetery was created when land was given for the cemetery by Mr William Poulter, a local settler, about 1864.
