Starting with Royal Horticultural Society 1855, in Survey Paddock. Purpose of establishment of this enterprise; Committee men: The planting by C French of Taxodium Sempervirens: a great flood and its destruction of the Burnley Gardens: this letter is handwritten. A note from C French, dated 23/5/1929, adds further information to the notes. States that Burnley Gardens were laid out by M Lynch and W Harbison as curator. 1201 Handwritten letter by C French to Charlie, thanking him for sending a copy of an article from The Sun. He comments on omissions from the article, provides names of men involved in the first years of the development of the B Gardens, says a good deal about G Neilson. 2 pages. 1202 Letter addressed to Director Botanical Gardens. Refers to a W. Ward, a horticulturalist and the willow tree Huntingdon Willow - Salix Alba (coerulea) Letter written by Charles French. States that willows were sent to Bot Gardens by Sir Joseph Hooker of Kew. The use of this for cricket bats. Willows being setn to Victorian nurseries in 1850s from England. CF States that he planted the first tree Taxodium sempervirens, in Burnley Gardens. Tree presented by JJ Rule of Richmond. 2 pages. 1203 Letter to Charlie from Charles French, signed also Dad This letter is said to be accompanying notes on the B Gardens (Burnley or Botanic?) 1204 Letter to Jessep from Charles French. A bridge to Walmer Street, Kew, from Abbotsford was located at the northern end of Burnley Street. It was a foot bridge.Photographic print of the Walmer Street Bridge. The view of the Bridge is from the Abbotsford side of the Yarra. A section of pipe on the near side of the bridge is a remnant of the irrigation pipes that carried water from above Dight's falls to the Melbourne Botanic Gardens. The former bridge, constructed in 1896 was swept away in the 1901 Flood. It has two major brick piers while the remainder of the trestle supports are metal. The original photograph from which this copy was made was taken after 1901 as it shows the second bridge under construction. Houses in Young Street, Kew, can be seen on the far side of the river.Written on reverse: "Walmer St. Bridge. Erected 1896. Being rebuilt after 1901 flood damaged it. Major floods recurred of the Yarra River on a regular basis. A flood in 1901 destroyed this house in Victoria Street, Abbotsford. Later print copy of an original photograph. Home of C/N Burgess on the south side of Yarra River. The buildings were washed away in a flood in 1901 The house was in the same location as that on which Handley & Tilly was later built. This would locate it on the north side of Victoria Street, Abbotsford between Burnley Street and the Victoria Street Bridge. Subsequently the area was not fully developed in this manner following flooding in 1863. Some remnants remain.Plan on paper with cloth backing. Inscription, "Designed by Alfred Lynch. Landscape Gardener, Prahran. Printed by De Guchy & Leigh." An inset plan shows position of Experimental Gardens related to the City of Melbourne and Bay. Plan shows layout and plantings of the designated area - fruit, vegetables: the conservatory, nursery, exhibition buildings. This plan was owned by E.E. Pescott. Inscription on cover, "Burnley. E.E.P.." "Ed. E. Pescott." Subsequently the area was not developed in this manner. See inscription on copy made for Centenary Exhibition B92.633. Other copies given to College by N. Lothian (graduated 1934). Jim Sanders, a friend of his, gave them to Dr. G. Moore in 1991. A larger copy, inscribed on reverse, '1861', 'Early proposals for Horticultural Gardens for Horticultural Society of Victoria (now Royal). The lithograph was included as an insert in the Farmers Journal and Gardeners Chronicle 21 June, 1862. It is only in one of the copies held by the State Library of Victoria. 1 large and 1 small photographs of plan. Several photocopies of the plan.Inscription, "Designed by Alfred Lynch.
