The Address was made by Francis Wilson Niven, a lithographer, printer and bookbinder from Ballarat. ...Niven, Francis Wilson...The Address was made by Francis Wilson Niven, a lithographer, printer and bookbinder from Ballarat. ...From the late 1870s to the 1930s, illuminated addresses were a popular way to commemorate special occasions and were given to recognize outstanding service. They featured beautiful calligraphy and ornate designs. Arthur Grace was a draper who ran a business in Linton (at 'Criterion House') from the mid-1860s until he left Linton to return to England in 1873. He later returned to live in Ballarat, where he died in 1905. He was heavily involved with the Methodist/Wesleyan congregation at Linton, and instrumental in establishing the Linton Mechanics' Institute and Free Library. The Address was made by Francis Wilson Niven, a lithographer, printer and bookbinder from Ballarat. (See 'Ballarat Star', 10 March 1873.)Framed document, an 'illuminated address' which was presented to Arthur Grace when he moved back to England from Linton in 1873. The Address was presented in acknowledgement of the "important services rendered by you in promoting the material and social prosperity of a district wherein you have so long resided, but more particularly for you liberality and cordial co-operation in establishing a Public Library at Linton".
