The land had originally been reserved for botanic garden purposes only and it was required to be re-reserved for botanic and recreation purposes, to allow a different use. By 1956 the land was officially re-gazetted, excavation started in 1957 and the pool was completed by 1959. The gardens, in which the pool is situated, is one of the earliest botanic gardens in regional Victoria. It was included on the Victorian Heritage Register in 2001. Thelma Randles Collection.
