Before the mid-1800s, peeling apples was a tedious, time-consuming task done entirely by hand with a knife. In 1864, Goodell began manufacturing a new, labor-saving device that he called the "Lighting apple parer". Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the company produced several wildly successful apple-peeling models.
