Item used to contain the compressor fuse on tram 14, salvaged during the project to renew the wiring of the tram. The box was located alongside the circuit breaker at No. 2 end of the tram. Demonstrates an item fitted to a tramcar to contain a renewable fuse.Wooden box containing a fuse, fuse holder and short sections of associated wire. The fuse holder is secured to the base of the box with brass screws. The box has a cover secured with a brass screw. There are two pieces of wire secured on the ceramic fuse holder, one of which the insulation has deteriorated and fallen off. The Forests Commission developed the use of helicopters for aerial ignition from the mid 1960s. Bryant and May at Richmond worked with the Commission to develop a Delayed Action Incendiary Device. DAIDs as the were known, had an overall length of 180 mm, striker end length - 10 mm. Ignition end length - 80 mm, then a layer of high melting point wax (to prevent accidental ignition when rubbing together in transit). Both ends coated with a modified match head compound with safety fuse exposed length between coated match ends. There was a 17-second delay from when the small end was struck to an intense flaming of the large end, which lasted for 40 seconds. Other types on large matches known as fusees were also used. Condiments Dispenser Set
A matching set of condiments dispensers consisting of a salt, pepper and mustard pots made from fuse fittings removed from artillery projectiles. The fuses have been modified, the salt and pepper shakers have a removable aluminium screw top for refilling and the mustard pot has the aluminium top hinged to open the pot. The removable salt and pepper shaker tops have been drilled with small diameter holes and the bottoms of all of the pieces have been sealed with a brass disc which acts as a base. These are manufactured from military hardware items and are thus classified as examples of trench art. The fuses are marked with a scale which is used for setting the fuse timing in graduations from 0 to 55 in increments of 5 around the body of the fuse with the letter 'S' (for safe) at the midpoint of the scale. The fuses are marked with a scale "0 to 55" in increments of 5 with the letter 'S' at the midpoint. -

Charles Perry was born in Cornwall in 1832 and came to Victoria when he was 25. He and John Hunter established a fuse factory in Wattle Street. Perry designed and patented a safety fuse that he was then able to put into production in 1875. In 1889 the business was sold to Bickford Smith and Co., English fuse manufacturers, who continued to manufacture fuses until 1912. Perry was active in community affairs and served as a councillor for the Sutton Ward in 1902. In 1970 the US M29 81mm mortar replaced the British 3-inch mortar which had been used by Australian forces since WW2 .The Australian designation is F2 81mm Mortar. It remains in use today.
