Bendigo Historical Society Inc.Book - "Information for people leaving Great Britain. 1854.", 1990
... Published by Macbeth Genealogical Books, Hampton. The book is a facsimile of the Colonization Circular in May, 1854. ...Published by Macbeth Genealogical Books, Hampton. The book is a facsimile of the Colonization Circular in May, 1854. ...Colonization Circulars were published in England from 1843 t0 1873, volumes 1 to 32. They were produced by Her Majesty's Colonial Land and Emigration Commissioners. Designed as occasional or annual handbooks to inform prospective migrants about life, travel, and economic conditions in British colonies, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa. Key information included: Travel Details: Costs and lengths of sea passages, and notes on assisted passage schemes. Economic Data: Prevailing local wages, labour demands, and retail prices for provisions and clothing. Official Regulations: Names and duties of emigration officers, summaries of passenger acts, and rules for land sales or crown land disposal. Practical Advice: Suggested outfit requirements for the voyage and guidelines for settlers. Colonial Land and Emigration Commission was created in 1840 to undertake the duties of two earlier and overlapping authorities under the supervision of the secretary of state: the Colonisation Commissioners for South Australia and the Agent General for Emigration. In 1855 it became the Emigration Commission. The commission's powers were gradually given up to the larger colonies as they obtained self-government, and after 1873 it was responsible only for controlling the importation of Indian labour into sugar-producing colonies. It was abolished in 1878 and an Emigration Department was then set up in the Colonial Office. This department was merged with the General Department in 1894, and abolished altogether in 1896. Soft cover. Title written in Royal Blue on front cover. Feint newspaper articles as background on both front and back covers. 38pp. Printed by Acacia Press Pty. Ltd. ISBN 0947158170. Published by Macbeth Genealogical Books, Hampton. The book is a facsimile of the Colonization Circular in May, 1854. No diagrams. colonization circular, emigration, travel -

The premise is that to escape the boredom of a rainy day, ten male members of the "Wessex Field and Antiquarian Club" gather together. To pass the time, each member including a local historian, an old surgeon, a rural dean, and a churchwarden takes a turn telling a scandalous, tragic, or ironic tale about a high-born lady from the local aristocracy of the 17th and 18th centuries. A Bible printed in 1789 with a personal handwritten inscription from 1792 is a true artefact of the late 18th century. The information on the book's title page refers to King George III, as Mark and Charles Kerr were prominent Scottish printers and stationers based in Edinburgh. In the 18th century, printing the Holy Bible wasn't something just anyone could do; it required a royal patent granted by the Crown to ensure textual accuracy and high-quality production. The Kerr family held the coveted title of "King's Printers for Scotland" during the late 1700s. Bibles from their press were highly regarded for their clear typography, sturdy leather bindings, and standard-setting quality. Dr Robert Gribben was born in 1943 in country Victoria where he was educated through primary and secondary state schools. He entered Queen’s College in 1961 in order to study degrees in law and arts, but after two years discontinued his legal studies and completed his Bachelor of Arts whilst beginning his candidature for the Methodist ministry. Reference books have entered the collection through donation, presentation, collection and purchase. genealogy -- handbooks local history -- archival resources. genealogy -- archival resources. ...Genealogists and local historians have probably seen every birth, marriage, death and census record available, and are adept at unsing the internet for research. However, once they have learnt everything they can from them, the next step is reading and understanding older documents. These can be hard to find (not many are online), are often written in challenging handwriting and use legal and other unfamiliar terms. Some will be in Latin, antiquated English or Scots.
