He was born in July 1887 in Elgin Street, Carlton and died at Ferntree Gully in August 1960. He was the son of George WALE, saddler, from London and Sarah WALE (nee WHEELER) from Ambrosden, England. He is believed to have lived in Station Street and later in Bridge Street, Port Melbourne.
