This folder of text and photographic memorabilia relating to Robert Wilson Baxter (1935py) is a fascinating record of this former student's service and ultimate sacrifice for his country. Robert Baxter was awarded the George Medal on the 28th July 1942 for heroism in rescuing a fellow crewman from the burning wreck of their aircraft. The Medal was received by his family after Robert's death on 7th August 1942 as a result of an accident while taking off on operations. Robert Baxter's father, also Robert Wilson Baxter, was a Ballarat businessman who purchased the Ballarat Star Newspaper in 1897, selling it to the Courier in 1924. He was also part of Baxter and Stubbs Pty. Ltd. (Printers). Robert's mother attended Mrs Kennedy's School for Girls. Items in the folder have historical significance as they document the service and sacrifice of a RAAF sergeant during World War Two. The King George VI Coronation Medal was issued in 1937 to commemorate the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. A total of 90,279 medals were struck and presented as personal souvenirs to government officials, military personnel, and Royal Household members throughout the Commonwealth. Of these, 6,887 were allocated to Australians. This medal was presented to WH Greaves, who as at the time the Town Clerk of the City of St Kilda.A silver medal featuring the crowned effigies of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth facing left. On the reverse is the Royal Cypher GRI above the date of the coronation, surmounted by a large crown. Around the rim are the inscribed words 'GEORGE VI QVEEN ELIZABETH'. This medal has been issued to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI of England in 1937. It was issued by a department store in Warrnambool, that of Cramond and Dickson. This business was established by John Glass Cramond and James Dickson in Timor Street, Warrnambool in 1855. It moved to Liebig Street at the corner of Timor Street and sold mens and ladies wear. It had its own tailors and milliners and the building was a landmark one in Warrnambool for over 100 years. It closed in 1973. In 1937 the business of Cramond and Dickson was 82 years old. This medal is of great interest as it shows the level of fervor for British Royalty and all things British that was prevalent in Warrnambool in the 1930s. The Cramond and Dickson business was one of the most important ones in Warrnambool’s history as it operated for over 100 years. This is a silver-coloured medal commemorating the Coronation of King George VI of England. One side has the heads of King George and Queen Elizabeth surrounded by wording and the other side has the name of the Warrnambool store issuing the medal. The medal is tarnished. Medal to commemorate the silver Jubilee (25th anniversary) of the accession of King George V to the throne on 6 May 1910.
