We have examined aerial photos from February 1956 and two large trees are present near where number 91 is today and were gone in a January 1960 image. Alistair Knox wrote about their protest against the depradations of the State Electricty Commission in his 1980 book, We are what we stand on, pp48-49. You can read about online at https://alistairknox.org/chapters/45 “Protest against the depradations of the State Electricity Commission 1956” - Alistair Knox (1980), We are what we stand on, pp48-49 “The fact that the number of trees in central Eltham has more than doubled since 1945 is an indication of how universal and powerful the movement has been. Eltham was fighting the S.E.C. and other government authorities in the 40's and 50's over the retention of indigenous trees. In the Christmas season of 1956 our conflict with them came to a dramatic confrontation that made headline news in all the daily papers for a week. It started in the Herald, was repeated in the Sun and taken up by the Age two days later. After four days, it was appearing in the New York Times.” “Some S.E.C. workers cut down two 100-year-old oak trees in Franklin Street. The inner Eltham community launched a frontal attack on bureaucratic bungling and arrogance that they have never forgotten.” “When the chairman of the Commission delivered his New Year's speech some weeks later, he emphasised that the commission's first responsibility was to protect trees. This was the antithesis of their previous attitude. For many years to come, tree-lopping Commission workers always pretended they were not there when our small explosive group passed by. With Council assistance, we also carried out free native tree plantings on the nature strips of most roads in the Central Riding in the l 950's, when the rhododendron and the gladioli flanked by pampas grass and flowering fruit trees were still being introduced into the most 'desirable' eastern suburbs.” The protest involved personalities such as Matcham Skipper; Lesley Martin; Alistair and Margot Knox and youn Hamish; Jack, Susan, Mavis and Laurel Gill; Hal Peck; Tim Burstall and Gordon Ford The location is about halfway between Main Road and Bible Street looking north, around number 91. Looking up the hill in a northerly direction, the house on the left is George Stebbing's original cottage at 88 Pitt Street, built around 1861. Little is recorded of this early Eltham builder and we have no picture of him. He arrived from England in August 1857 and settled at Eltham after a short period at Kangaroo Ground. His occupation is often listed as a farmer but he built a number of important buildings between 1860 and 1880. Those remaining include Shillinglaw Cottage (c.1858), St. Margaret’s Church (1860), Uniting Church (formerly Methodist Church 1880) and his house at 88 Pitt Street (1861). 'Shillinglaw Trees' in background. The cottage and land were purchased by the Shire of Eltham as the site for a new shire office building. The cottage was destined for demolition but members of the community concerned at losing one of the areas earliest buildings (built c.1859) initiated a fund-raising campaign to save the cottage. In 1964 the cottage was dis-assembled, all the bricks numbered and reassembled several hundred meters to the south on a site between the Gahan house and the Eltham Railway Trestle Bridge (present-day Panther Place), which became known as the Eltham Common. The new shire offices at 895 Main Road were opened in 1965. Following the Kennett Government amalgamation of local government areas in 1994, the Shire of Eltham ceased to exist, and a new Shire of Nillumbik was created 15 December 1994 from the former Eltham shire and parts of the Diamond Valley shire. The former West Riding which included parts of Montmorency, Lower Plenty and Briar Hill were ceded to the new City of Banyule. Commissioners were appointed for several years and the new Council occupied the former offices of the Shire of Diamond Valley in Greensborough. The former Eltham Shire offices remained vacant until August 1996 the Commissioners suddenly elected to have the former Shire offices demolished immediately and the site has remained vacant ever since. It was not until 1997 before the community was allowed to democratically elect new Councillors to represent them. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' Charles Wingrove was a prominent figure in Victorian local government, as secretary to the Eltham District Road Board and Shire Council from 1858 to 1904, and, as Shire Engineer and Secretary to the Heidelberg Road Board. He was part of the Committee to establish the Church of England at Eltham. The Wingroves were an important pioneer family of Eltham and Wingrove Cottage is one of the most important heritage buildings in Eltham as one of the few surviving 19th century buildings. Reputedly built in 1858, Wingrove Cottage was recorded in the 1859-60 Eltham Road District rates book as a brick house owned and occupied by Wingrove with a Net Annual Value (NAV) of ₤30. In 1861, the year the Church opened, Wingrove's house was identified as a two -roomed brick cottage. Charles Wingrove is buried with other members of his family in the cemetery at St Katherine’s Church, St. Helena. It is believed a Mrs M Willoughby operated the tea rooms around October 1919. Arthur James McDonald became proprietor of the Eltham Park Tea Rooms some time between 1942 and 1945. In the 1942 Electoral Roll he was recorded living in Moonee Ponds as an aircraft fitter and was then recorded as a tea-room proprietor at Main Road, Eltham in the 1946 Electoral Roll. By 1949 he had moved to Leongatha where he was a café proprietor. A picture of the 1934 floods (EDHS_00103) shows the tea rooms surrounded by waist height flood waters. This building was a different structure. It is not known whether the building was demolished and rebuilt because of this flood event or sometime later to the building seen in this photograph, however it appears to be of a mid-1950s style. During the 1950s it was a milk bar as seen in this photograph and served Devonshire teas in the late 1950s, open only on weekends to service the park and miniature railway opposite. Locals who were children of the late 1950s on recall buying bags of lollies and drinks such as Blue Heaven Spider (ice cream float) and crackers for cracker night. At one point the shop also had pinball machines. It is believed the section of the building to the right was a residence. By the time the Shire of Eltham celebrated its centenary in 1971, the Eltham South Milk Bar was under new management. During the 1980s the shop was operated by Ansell and Muir and they offered takeaway fast food, such as spring rolls and especially hot chicken and chips. Locals also fondly recall their chicken schnitzel with lemon juice. It is remembered as one of the best takeaway food shops, fresh food and fast service with great parking. The residence section to the right was developed as an art, pottery and crafts gallery, Bimbadeen, run by Don Brown, then a local artist. It was taken over in the late 1980s as River Clay run by Leo Haanappel and Coeny Dommers. Unfortunately, the store stood within the 1934 flood zone and the property was unable to be redeveloped. The former Shire of Eltham acquired the land, and the building was subsequently demolished. In December 1993 company registration for Ansell and Muir Prestige Catering was cancelled and the business dissolved. The location is now the site of the current Fleur de Feliss flower stall tent. 17 December 1993 company registration cancelled for Ansell and Muir Prestige Catering Pty. Ltd.
