Bendigo has many fine buildings, and many historic buildings. Two architects have made outstanding contributions to Bendigo. The first is William Vahland whose work spanned more than fifty years. From 1857 until shortly after the first World War, he and his partners designed banks, churches, schools, theatres, hotels and private and business premises. From 1858 until his death in 1875, Robert Getzshmann was Vahland's partner. Later partnerships involved his son Henry and following Henry's death, John Beebe. William Beebe was born in Bendigo, trained as a stonemason under his father, and studied architectural drawing at the Bendigo School of Mines. Following his father's death in 1891, William Beebe devoted his time exclusively to his architectural practice. From 1854 to 1891 Bendigo was officially known as Sandhurst. Soft cover.
