Alexander Robert Learmonth was a former Sunshine Resident, H.V. McKay / Massey Ferguson employee. He served in the Australian Army during WW1 and was one of the first 1000 volunteer recruits to signed up.
Learmonth Crescent, Sunshine West was named after him.
The Australian Imperial Force, including the Victorian artillery units, was originally meant to train in England. Overcrowding there forced a change of plans, and when the convoy reached the Suez Canal in late 1914, the troops were diverted to Egypt instead.
