In 1853, Bendigo Miners protested against the 30 shilling miners licence the had to pay the government. They wore red ribbons to show their protest and shopkeepers hung red ribbons outside their premises in support. Thousands of miners signed a petition to Governor LaTrobe to no avail. A protest gathering in Pall Mall marched to the Government camp on Camp Hill but this was a peaceful event again to no real avail.Poster produced the Bendigo Historical Society, supported by Bendigo Senior Seconday College, advertising the re-enactment of the Red Ribbon Rebellion (also referred to as the Red Ribbon Agitation) 'Abolition of the license tax, great open air meeting to the public of Bendigo' Held on Thursday September 2, 2004. Sir Arvi Hiller Parbo: A.H. Parbo joined Western Mining Corporation in 1956 and over the next 12 years held the positions of Underground Surveyor, Underground Manager, Technical Assistant to the Managing Director, and Deputy General Superintendent. He was appointed General Manager in 1968 and became a Director in 1970. He was appointed Deputy Managing Director in 1971 and became Managing Director in the same year. In 1974, Parbo was appointed Chairman and Managing Director of Western Mining Corporation. Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC), incorporated on 2 March 1933, was active in minerals exploration and production in Australia and elsewhere until taken over by BHP Billiton in June 2005. A comprehensive history of the company has not been published, but there is a great deal of published and unpublished material recording various aspects of its activities.
