Built in 1926 the Ben Green memorial Rotunda was named after a local citizen of Charlton. Ben Green was a solicitor and member who supported many school prizes for literature. Ben was also president of the Charlton Club and of the Charlton Coursing Club. Ben was a keen tennis player, winning Victorian Championships in 1892, 1893, and 1984. The bottle represents the cordial making industry that existed in Charlton during the late 1800's, early 1900's. We are unsure of the site of the factory, but the local iceworks existed into the 1960's. It was located on the corner of Camp and Armstrong Streets. This is important because it represents an industry that existed in Charlton many years ago. It would have been an early form of today's soft drink.Clear glass bottle. On January 18, 1875, Mr R.A. Nicholson opened Charlton's first school. On the first day of school he wrote to the education department stating that 42 children were in attendance and also sent in a request for the Minister of Education to supply the "much needed accommodation" which had been promised to him some time ago as there was only a bark hut 18 feet by 10 feet for present purposes. Three weeks later, Mr Nicholson wrote again to the Education Department, sending in the above photograph of the bark hut as a photographer had recently been in the area. He once again stressed his need for a more suitable building. The smoker's cap belonged to Mr John Bennett one of the pioneer settlers of Dooboobetic and Yeungroon. Round smoker's cap, Material are blue fabric outer with bead work in yellow beading.
