Rosalind LAWSON (11 January 1948 - ) Born Ballarat, Victoria Rosalind Lawson has spent much of her career working in rural environements, in Australia and Ireland. She has exhibited widely, and in 1997 won the Broken Hill Outback Art Prize. She holds a Master of Fine Art from R.M.I.T. (1995), a Diploma of Fine Art from R.M.I.T, A Diploma of Physical Education, from the University of Melbourne, and a Trained Teachers' Certificate from Melbourne Secondary Teachers' College . Between 1989 and 2012 Ros Lawson Lecturered in painting, drawing, papermaking, and was a tutor in Art History, at the University of Ballarat Arts Academy (now Federation University). Her studio practice includes painting, drawing and paper art using handmade paper. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. This page is from a Tibetan prayer book. Such books are long, narrow, and printed horizontally. The pages are unbound and stored with wooden covers with silk brocade wrapped around them. The ancient Tibetan art of printing was developed to reproduce Buddhist scriptures and images of the Buddha. Monasteries or wealthy laypersons often commissioned books to gain spiritual merit. Books were printed using woodblock technique, still utilised today, on handmade paper. Scripture books are venerated by both monks and general population. A double-sided sheet of Buddhist scripture written in Tibetan script on hand-made paper. Woodblock printing in Tibet began to flourish from the 10th century onwards, driven by the high demand for Buddhist scriptures and images. Monasteries saw woodblock printing as a means to preserve and propagate authentic Buddhist teachings. The durability of woodblocks made them ideal for creating lasting impressions of sacred texts, enabling mass production and wide dissemination.This woodblock print on hand-made paper depicts Gesar, a legendary Tibetan warrior king who is invoked as a protector of the Buddha's teachings and emanation of Padmasambhava. Gesar's image is surrounded by four magical animals - garuda (top left), makara (top right), tiger (bottom left) and snow lion (bottom right). This is one of four bottles in our Collection that were recovered by a local diver from the quarantine area just inside the Port Phillip Heads. Ships were required to pull into this area to check for diseases etc before they could head up to Melbourne. Quite often they would drink and throw the bottles overboard. Handmade glass bottle, manufactured in 1850's - 1900's. Glass bottles and glass jars are in many households around the world. The first glass bottles were produced in south-east Asia around 100 B.C. and the Roman Empire around 1 AD. America's glass bottle and glass jar industry were born in the early 1600s when settlers in Jamestown built the first glass-melting furnace. The invention of the automatic glass bottle blowing machine in 1880 industrialized the process of making bottles. In 2019, plans were made to re-introduce milk glass bottle deliveries to Auckland in early 2020 The earliest bottles or vessels were made by ancient man. Ingredients were melted to make glass and then clay forms were dipped into the molten liquid. When the glass cooled off, the clay was chipped out of the inside leaving just the hollow glass vessel. This glass was very thin as the fire was not as hot as modern-day furnaces. The blowpipe was invented around 1 B.C. This allowed molten glass to be gathered at the end of the blowpipe and blown into the other end to create a hollow vessel. Eventually, the use of moulding was introduced, followed by the invention of the semi-automatic machine called the Press and Blow. In 1904 Michael Owens invented the automatic bottle machine. Before this time most glass bottles in England were hand blown. In the 1890s, American Ever-Ready Company founder Conrad Hubert invented the electric flash light which worked with his dry cell batteries . The first Ever Ready flash light was patented in 1898. The first portable flashlights were hand-made from crude paper and fibre tubes, with a bulb and a rough brass reflector. Because batteries were weak and bulbs primitive, flashlights of the era produced only a brief flash of light- thus the name. This torch is named a Bullseye because of the glass lens at the top.This torch helps to interpret the development of lighting. The collection of whale oil lamps as well as gas and electric lighting. Silver coloured metal torch. It has a body and a lid/top. The body is hip flask shaped. On the side of the body is a silver coloured metal button which can be slid up and down. On both the front and back of the body and the top centre are tow small raised circles. The top, which can be removed has a glass dome on it. The inside of the body has a small piece of contact metal where the slide button on the outside turn the torch on and off. In the centre at the top there is the light bulb. The base of the body can also be removed. Report - hand made on very thin paper, almost rice paper, 3 pages + cover note of 2/11/1921 to Mr. Wilcox, General Manager from Mr. C. W. Young and W. A. Savage, Assist Traffic Manager titled "Proposed Flying City Shunt". Report suggests that improved shunting arrangements are needed at Collins and Spencer St due to increased traffic. Notes cars can be shunted in abnormal conditions in 40 seconds. Normal shunting was 60secs it appears. Report gives details of the costs and the shunting times taken to turn cable sets around. The cover note of 2/11/1921, re-submits the report to Mr Dix from a person (can read the signature) from the Fitzroy Power House. Last page was scanned separately as a jpg file. This note book contains handwritten material by Ron Uebergang – notes on engineering drawings prepared for a class at Warrnambool Technical School 1919-1921. Ronald Uebergang (1903-1971) was the son of Ernest and Mary Uebergang. He attended Allansford State School and Warrnambool Technical School and spent his working life dairying and raising cattle on the family property, Hopkins Hill, at Allansford, about nine kilometres east of Warrnambool. He was mechanically minded, fond of music and dancing and a keen photographer. These notes are of interest as they were compiled by Ron Uebergang when he was a student at Warrnambool Technical School 1919-21. The Uebergang families were pioneering settlers in the Allansford area and have been prominent farmers in the area from the 1850s on. The notes also are a good example of the work done by students at Warrnambool Technical School in the 1920s. This is a hand-made book of 22 pages with notes on engineering drawings by Ron Uebergang handwritten in black ink. There is tissue paper inserted between some of the pages. This map was printed in 1925 and contains the Warrnambool Harbour alterations proposed by the Warrnambool Harbour Committee incorporating the original designs of Captain Menzies, the Warrnambool Harbour Master and the City Engineer, Mr A. Lavercombe. The main features of the proposal were the extension of the Eastern Wall to almost enclose the harbour and a basin in Lake Pertobe. The design was to be placed before the Victorian Royal Commission on the Outer Ports which was established partly to examine the allegations of unsatisfactory work carried out in Warrnambool when the Breakwater was extended 300 feet in 1914 and also to make recommendations regarding all regional ports. The Warrnambool Breakwater was completed in 1890 but failed to provide the shipping conditions needed to continue Warrnambool as a viable port. Many plans and proposals for port improvement such as this one were produced in the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century with the port officially closed in the 1940s. Still today the Breakwater and Warrnambool Harbour conditions remain a source of contention.This map is significant as it shows a 1925 design for Warrnambool Harbour hitherto little-known. It also has markings showing land sites of the time (BayView Hotel, Woollen Mill etc.)This is a map made of thick yellow paper pasted onto a cloth backing. It has two cloth tags at the top for tying up the map when folded. It appears to be a hand-drawn map copied with printed material added. The map is shaded green and red in some areas. Attached by nails to the map are wooden frames, rounded at the bottom and partly curved at the top. The map is torn and partly detached at the top. This folder contains photographs, advertisements and a sample of a piece of blanket from the Warrnambool Woollen Mill. This mill was officially opened in South Warrnambool in 1910 following the establishment of a local public company. The first manager was John Bennett from Yorkshire, England. The operations of the mill expanded with new buildings enabling the business to double in size by 1915. In the 1940s the factory was employing 700 people. In 1968 the factory was sold to Dunlop Australia but was sold again in 1982 to Onkaparinga Woollen Company. In 1983 Mcquarie Worsteds took over the factory with the business then known as Warrnambool Textiles. In 2000 the mill closed and most of the buildings were later demolished for a housing estate. This item is an attractive and informative memento of one of Warrnambool’s most important businesses of the past. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill operated for 90 years and employed many local people. The photographs are of particular interest.This is a rectangular-shaped sheet of buff-coloured lightweight cardboard. It has been folded twice to create six pages in a folder. Three pages contain black and white photographs of the woollen mill operations and two pages contain advertising material with black and white images. One page has a cream blanket piece of material attached to the page by two staples and this has the brand name stitched onto the right hand corner This piece of blanket also has a paper guarantee card attached by staples. These cello strings belonged to Edith Jacobs (nee Larwill) who was prominent in music circles in Queensland before her marriage to Henry Jacobs, a Warrnanbool Estate Agent and Auctioneer during the 1940s and 50s. Edith Jacobs featured in many concerts and musical entertainments in Warrnambool during the middle years of the 20th century. Her son, Frank Jacobs was a prominent businessman in Warrnambool in the 70s, 80s and 90s and the wallet was either made by him or for him. These items are of some significance as they belonged to Edith Jacobs, a musician who was prominent in the Warrnambool musical scene in Warrnambool in the 1940s and 50s.This is a light brown leather wallet, hand made with two fringed areas, one on the top covering. There is some machine stitching and some hand stitching (repairs)The wallet is lined with cream-coloured silk and the back of the wallet has an etching of an emu. Australia is governed by a Federal Government and by six State Governments. National coordination of their respective geodetic survey and topographic mapping activities is effected on the advice of a National Mapping Council. Twenty years ago, at least 95% of Australia was poorly mapped and what maps existed were in need of revision. only a small area of the continent was covered by horizontal geodetic control and there was no scheme for a national levelling survey. Over the intervening period there has been an urgent and increasing demand for topographic maps varying from large scale contoured maps in support of specific engineering projects to rapid reconnaissance maps required for mineral prospecting in remote areas. Superimposed on this has been a defence requirement, specifically for military training areas, and generally for maps of the whole country. During the period much progress has been made. This is a docket issued by Warrnambool Cordials Pty Ltd in 1935 to the Warrnambool Club. Warrnambool Cordials was originally established in the early 1920s by the Lescai Brothers who had their business in Fairy Street. A company of local businessmen took over the cordial factory for some time when the Lescai brothers left the city, then it was purchased by a garage proprietor, Thomas Hill, and in the early 1930s Charles and Frederick Flett purchased the business and carried it on for a few years. It was later operated by Thomas McKenzie before it was closed. It was still operating in 1975 when it was manufacturing Loys and McKenzie’s soft drinks. It is noted that this docket contains the information that the Warrnambool Cordials business was a winner of a Bronze Medal for lemonade at the Royal Show in 1931. The Warrnambool Club, established in 1874 when the Warrnambool Club Hotel in Kepler Street was opened, was a gentleman’s club. A new Warrnambool Club building was erected in Kepler Street in 1877 and is still in use today. This original docket is of interest as an example of the type of purchase made by the Warrnambool Club in 1935 and the type of docket used by the firm of Warrnambool Cordials.This is a docket printed on green paper with blue printed material and blue lines. Zilles Printers was begun by Lewis Zilles in the early 1930s. It was in McKenzie Street Ballarat. His son Jeffrey also became a printer - letterpress, offset and screen printer. The business became Zilles Printers/Graphics and was in Armstrong Street and later Bell Street Ballarat. Montrose Cottage was build c1856 by John Alexander, builder. He was a Scottish stone mason. It was built with bluestone and hand-made bricks. It is on the Historic Buildings Register, National Trust (Victoria). It is important as a substantial and very early stone cottage. The house is now open to the public. It also provides short term accommodation - self contained apartments. Card produced for Christmas. Lancelot Herbert came to Orbost in 1886, taking up a partnership with local store-owner Massey Coote. After Mr Coote's death in 1891, Lancelot took over the store. Lancelot died in 1911. In 1918, following the death of adjacent shop-owner George Temple, the Herbert family purchased that shop. Progressively Herberts Snowy River Stores grew into a department store of several shops along Nicholson St. They also had small shops at Cann River, Noorinbee and Genoa which were run by members of the family, as well as a carrying business and fuel outlets. Lancelot died on 2/6/1911 and his wife Martha [died 1945] are buried in a joint grave in Orbost Cemetery. (info. Noreen and Lindsay Thomson). This 1911 Invoice from Lancelot Herbert of Snowy River Stores is made out to R P Cameron. Mr Cameron was a member of another early family in the Orbost/Snowy River district. This item is associated with a well-known Orbost business which started in 1888 and finally closed in c.1970. it is an example of book-keeping in the early 20th century and is a useful research tool.A white paper account with black print and red lines. This Elector's Right Certificate, No. 206179, is for Samuel Richardson, a sawyer, who lived at Bullarook in the Ballarat East Division. It has been signed by W. Cantwell, the registrar and by Samuel Richardson. As a resident and a male he was entitled to vote in the Ballarat East Division at Victorian State elections. Samuel Richardson was a sawmiller and farmer in Orbost. He built The Curlip, a wooden paddle-steamer of 9 tons gross and dimensions of 43 feet long, 10 feet wide and a depth of 3 feet, on the slipway at their Tabarra sawmill in 1890. "The Richardson family was one of the very early settler families to establish themselves in the Orbost district. Samuel Richardson was builder of the Paddle Steamer Curlip.A white paper licence certificate No. 182 made out to Samuel Richardson & Son for the purpose of a Saw Mill. Sunshine biscuits were made in Ballarat from 1921. During WW11 Sunshine biscuits devoted 80 percent of its output to army services. The company was twice devastated by fire. In 1923 the factory was completely destroyed and was rebuilt as a more modern factory on the same site. In 1939, a deliberately lit fire demolished the workshop. Sunshine biscuits continued to be sold until 1991. Biscuits were sold by weight from a large tin in the grocer's shop.This tin seems to be a commercial tin used in a grocery shop. Children used slates to practise writing letters and numbers.
