This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scots Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had four daughters – Frances (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved from Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. The designation "Nippon porcelain" refers to porcelain made in Japan for export to the west, and stamped with the word Nippon on their bases. This practice began in 1891 in response to the U.S. McKinley Tariff Act, which forbade the import of items that weren't "plainly marked, stamped, branded, or labelled in legible English words." Unfortunately, many reproduction or fake pieces were also produced. In 1921 "Nippon" was no longer accepted by U.S. Customs Agents as the correct name of origin so from then on, imported Japanese porcelain was supposed to be marked "Japan". This information helps us to establish provenance of this item. This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. It is also an excellent example of Japanese porcelain of the early 20th century.A hand painted coffee cup and saucer with gold trim and floral design. Saxony‑made vase, cherished by a Lutheran family in the Lowan Shire. Crafted in Saxony and brought to Australia by early settlers, this vase became a valued possession within a Lutheran household in the Lowan Shire, reflecting both their heritage and the region’s migrant story.Vase from Saxony, treasured in a Lowan Shire Lutheran home. This finely made Saxon vase was preserved for generations by a Lutheran family in the Lowan Shire, symbolising the cultural continuity carried by German settlers into the Wimmera district. This is a decorative ceramic vase with an ornate, scalloped rim finished in a metallic silver tone. Two stylised handles rise from the shoulders, each shaped with soft curves that complement the vase’s overall elegance. The body is cream‑coloured with warm tan shading at the top and base, giving it a gentle gradient effect. The central decoration features a richly painted floral motif: yellow and deep red roses surrounded by green foliage and small white blossoms. Gold scrollwork frames the bouquet, adding a refined, almost Rococo touch. The underside shows wear consistent with age and use. It carries a green maker’s mark stamped in a shield‑like outline reading "PROV. SXE. E.S." indicating production by Erdmann Schlegelmilch, pottery factory in Provincial Saxony. The simple cottagy handpainted designs of Louse Powell's on Wedgewood creamware was popular in the 1920s. This is one of a set of four (possibly originally six) Louisa Powell decorated Wedgewood cups and saucers. Louise Powell was the grand-daughter of Emile Lessor.Wedgwood sought to offer a new product range which, after its success, lead to she and her husband receiving money towards a studio to work, two assistants in London and a studio in the Wedgwood factory. Their brief was to developed the art wares within the company. Their style was sought by Wedgwood to mass-produce works which coincided with the arts and crafts movement. A lot of Louise's work was individual as she preferred calligraphic and heraldic motifs. Most of her designs were hand painted and a lot of her patterns were derived from nature in a calligraphic fashion.Underglaze printed Wedgewood label to base with Louisa Powell cypher. wedgewood, louise powell, creamware, cottage designs., emile lessor, porcelain
