James Hartley originally came to Bendigo in 1895 for a cycling race and decided to move there. In 1901 he was joined by his brother William and they began manufacturing bicycles. They expanded into importing motorcycles.
James Learmonth Shoosmith (1881-1942) became the manager of Hartley Bros. in 1914. He married Ethel May Rule (1884-1951) in 1908. Shoosmith was the founding president of the Bendigo Cycling Club in 1921.Hartley's Invoice: No 11939 (J. L. Shoosmith).
