It was given to Alexander Ure in 1889, the son of Scottish migrants, John and Jane Ure who settled on acreage north of Gembrook in 1874. They called their property 'Silver Wells' because of finding a pure and plentiful water source when digging their initial well. Silver Wells became the commercial centre of the early Gembrook settlement with shops, post office etc. When the train came through in 1900 the Gembrook commercial centre shifted to its present location, near the railway station.
