Expertly edited by David Adams, a former editor of the Sydney Bulletin magazine, the collection reads like a novel — partly of courtships and romances, partly of the progress of a pioneering family, and partly of Rachel Henning's own progress towards acceptance of her new way of life. The letters were first published in the Bulletin in 1951 and were so well received that they were quickly presented in book form. Thereafter they have scarcely been out of print and the grace, liveliness and gossipy intimacy of Rachel's prose have earned them a unique place in Australian literature. This edition is illuminated with illustrations of the period - some believed to be by Rachel herself, others by members of her family and others by artists and sketchers who would have been Rachel's contemporaries. Wherever possible, the work of women has been included. Taken from sketchbooks and note pads, their often unfinished images give as intimate a view of life in Australia from the 1850s to the 1880s as do Rachel's letters. Eric Juckert He worked as a potter and painter from around 1949 to 1992 in Victoria. His pottery was also sold by the department stores Myer and David Jones under the trade name “Jacqueline”.He then set up a studio at Point Road, Grossard Point, Ventnor on Phillip Island, in 1959 where he continued working there until 1992. Henning Alfred Rathjen (1903–1968) was one of the Australian-born artists who established a new pottery studio to cater for local demand and post-war innovations in art pottery. Rathjen established his pottery studio in Melbourne in 1948, producing quality slip-cast wares over the next 20 years. Max COWARD ( -1991) Born Ballarat Max Coward was training to be an art teacher at the Ballarat Technical Art School from 1937 to 1941. He enlisted in the A.I.F. and was a Naval Trainee at Flinders Naval Depot in 1941. During these years Max Coward was described as a cartoonist and illustrator, and was was attached to the Naval Intelligence Division in 1945, producing stories and drawings for the Navy newspaper Dit. His work was reproduced in the Christmas annual, HMAS Mk IV and the Army educational journal, Salt. He was a foundation staff member at the Burwood Teachers' College art department when it opened at Box Hill in 1954, transferring to the Burwood Campus in 1955. Upon his retirement he moved to Queensland to start a graphic arts consultancy. Coward was active as a printmaker during the 1970s. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Framed limited edition linocut by Max Coward. 'Hen Party' uses simplified forms reminiscent of the shapes gracing 'moderne' interiors of the 1950s and 1960s.
