Catherine Helen Spence (31 October 1825 – 3 April 1910) was a Scottish-born Australian author, teacher, journalist, politician and leading suffragette. Her family moved to South Australia in 1839. In 1897 she became Australia's first female political candidate after standing (unsuccessfully) for the Federal Convention held in Adelaide. Given the epitaph "Grand Old Woman of Australasia", Spence was commemorated on the Australian 5 dollar note issued for the Centenary of Federation of Australia. She was one of the prime movers, with C. Emily Clark (sister of John Howard Clark), of the "Boarding-out Society". This organization had as its aim the placing of destitute children, who would otherwise be sent to "Industrial School", into approved families. "Following the 1919 amalgamation of suburban tramway trusts, an electrified tram service extended along Doncaster Road. Housing estates such as the 1919 Balwyn Park Estate, 1922 Hillcrest Estate and the Camberwell City Heights Estate, also 1922, quickly followed. These estates were built over by expansive suburban villas, set in fine gardens and along tree-lined streets. North Balwyn, largely constructed since 1933, was typified by even grander houses, many of them in the 'ocean liner' style and seen at their most distinctive in the Riverview Estate." Albert (Abby) Trewin (b.21.03.1876 d. 01.07.1970) was part of the Trewin family who were early settlers at Jarrahmond near Orbost. Albert was born at Kingston near Ballarat, shifted to Jarrahmond where the house was called "Hillview", located 3 miles from Orbost on the B Road. The Trewin selection at Jarrahmond had many big trees on it and because these looked a bit like Jarrah trees from Western Australia, they names their property Jarrahmond (which became the district location and the name of Jarrahmond School). He cleared the land with bullocks, horses, crosscut saws, burned the stumps, burying some logs which were too big to burn. Then they milked cows, planted maize, had pigs, drove the pigs to Bairnsdale or to Waygara (c. 1915 when the train reached Waygara) on a buggy track through the bush. Pigs went to Dandenong Bacon Factory where they were processed into Dandy Ham. Robert MAIR Robert (Bob) Mair (1943- ) Born New Zealand A potter who trained at the Sturt Pottery in Mittagong under Les Blakebrough and later set up a pottery at Clifton Pugh’s Dunmoochin estate at Cottles Bridge near Melbourne. He then worked with John Olsen for two years from 1969-1970, with Mair throwing and Olsen hand-decorating the pots. During the 1970s, Bob Mair worked in goldfield production pottery in Ballarat with Robert Pitman before moving to Clarendon in the Adelaide Hills in South Australia in 1982. In the late 1880s and 1990s Robert Mair is working at Sturt Pottery timeline again in the late 1980s/1990s as a visiting potter under Campbell Hegan. In the early 2000s, he and partner Janie Kerr set up a pottery at Braemar in the Southern Highlands of NSW. They then moved, first to Sutton Forest where they took up a residency at Hillview, the former summer residence of the governors of NSW, then to Wingham in the Mid North Coast region of NSW. Mair’s work may be marked with an impressed ‘RM’, an impressed tricuspid symbol or both. In Clarendon, he continued to use the tricuspud symbol with an impressed ‘Old Clarendon Pottery Adelaide’ stamp.
