This book examines, as a whole, the Jewish ghettos of Europe during the second world war. The study draws on testimonies of former inhabitants, and makes use of memoirs and diaries (exploring the problems inherent in such sources). Although the author also draws on German documentary sources, the focus of the study is the ghettos 'from below'.
