The original author of this work was Quintus Horatius Flaccus, one of the leading Roman lyric poets during the time of Augustus Caesar (1st century BCE). This volume features the complete surviving works of Horace, rendered entirely into English prose. It includes his famous Odes, or lyrical poems, as well as his earlier poems on politics and social issues of the time. It also features his Satires, which offer humorous commentaries on Roman life, and his Epistles, or letters in verse, which include his highly influential work on literary criticism, the Ars Poetica (or The Art of Poetry).
