Vera Margaret Elizabeth Hore was born 20th Nov. 1909 and died in July 2000. ...The Bogong Hotel, Tawonga, was 125 years old and destroyed by fire early December 2011. Mr and Mrs Crotty started the hotel - one daughter married a Higginson and they ran the pub for a number of years. The Hore family then took over - Dick and Essie, followed by Norman and Vera, then the other Hore brothers. The Bogong Hotel was 125 years old and the meeting place for people living along the Upper Kiewa River until it was burnt down in December 2011. Its publican was Vera Hore. Vera Margaret Elizabeth Hore was born 20th Nov. 1909 and died in July 2000. She was a keen amateur photographer. Black and white photo of a car in the front of the Bogong Hotel with two large trees. A Kew resident from 1949, she was elected to Council in 1972, after several attempts, and served for twenty- three years until her death in 1994. A secondary teacher by profession, Cr Hore represented College and Sackville Wards. While a councillor, she was a resident of High and later Pakington Streets. She served on Council committees and was a delegate to the Kew Elder Citizens Association, the Family and Community Services (FACS) Local Consultative Committee, and the Kew Music Centre Board of Management. During her Mayoral year, she was instrumental in memorialising Vance and Nettie Palmer, significant Kew writers and poets, by unveiling a plaque at the Kew Library in the year of the centenary of their births. In May 1994, the Mayor of Kew, Cr Tom Indovino, named a meeting room at Kew Library, the Phyllis Hore Room in recognition of her service to the City. She is buried in the Heidelberg (Warringal) Cemetery. It was broken during Vera Hore's lifetime, 1909 - 2000. The bridge over the East Kiewa River enabled people to travel between Mt Beauty and Tawonga. Vera Hore (nee Ryder), the publican of the Tawonga Hotel, took this photo as she was a keen amateur photographer. Vera lived from Nov. 1909 to July 2000.Colored photo of 'Broken Bridge' over the East Kiewa River on Damm's Road with Mt Bogong, with snow, in the background of centre top. Framed with 2 cm wide cream cardboard surrounded by a metal decorated frame. The back has a flap for displaying the photo on a bench or table. The building in the fore ground of the photo was built before the Mt Beauty township was built as the occupier was working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme.The Barters came to work on the State Electricity Commission of Victoria's Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme before housing in the town of Mt Beauty was built. The Barters rudimentary dwelling was probably not a legal building. The photo was taken by Vera Hore (nee Ryder), the publican at the Bogong Hotel near Tawonga South where the photo was taken. Slide Robin Boyd ...Penleigh Boyd, Robin and Patricia Boyd's son, writes “Prior to 1950 Robin, like most other amateur or hobby photographers, took black and white printed photographs. The oldest slides date from 1950 when Robin and Patricia travelled to Europe on Robin’s Robert Haddon Travelling Scholarship.” In 1948 Robin Boyd was awarded ‘joint first place’ in the Robert Haddon competition for his design of Mildura art gallery. The scholarship helped fund their first overseas trip. Robin and Patricia were passengers on the Greek ship “Cyrenia” departing in May 1950, passing through the Suez Canal and landing in Genoa five weeks later. For six months, they travelled extensively throughout Europe (predominantly driving themselves) - France, Italy, United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain.Colour slide in a mount. The Hore family then took over - Dick and Essie, followed by Norman and Vera, then the other Hore brothers. ...Its publicans included members from local families - the Crotty's, Higginson's and Hore's including Vera Hore who was born in 1909 and died in 2000. ...The Bogong Hotel, Tawonga, was 125 years old when it was destroyed by fire early December, 2011. Mr & Mrs Crotty started the hotel, then one of their daughters who married a Higginson continued running it for a number of years. The Hore family then took over - Dick and Essie, followed by Norman and Vera, then the other Hore brothers. The Bogong Hotel commenced in 1886 and was the meeting place for people living in the Upper Kiewa Valley until it was burnt down in December 2011. Its publicans included members from local families - the Crotty's, Higginson's and Hore's including Vera Hore who was born in 1909 and died in 2000.
