In the 18th century people did not buy sugar as granules or lumps as we do today. Instead, it came in large cone shapes, wrapped in paper, called sugar-loaves. These were made from sugar grown on plantations in the Americas. Sugar nippers like these were used for cutting off small pieces from sugar-loaves for domestic use. This pair looks to be made by a blacksmith.Iron tool with two handles. The tool has a pincer type end with opposing blades - each prong having a flat spade type shape to the end. There is also a protruding piece of metal about half way up the tool and a hinged piece and the top of one of the handles. The metal is rusted.tools, portland, household provisions, groceries, glenelg shire council cultural collection
