The Centenary Royal Show in 1934 was held in honour of one hundred years since the city of Melbourne was established 1834. The Show was opened by HRH Prince Henry, pictured on the certificate. Commemorative, souvenir booklet of the visit to the RSS Mills by HRH Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester on Saturday, 3rd November 1934. HRH stayed at 'Ercildoune' at Burrumbeet, Victoria, home of H. Alan Currie, MLC, and a merino stud containing descendents of the historic King George III flock. HRH Prince Henry Duke of Gloucester came to Australia in late 1934, and to Victoria in time for the Centenary Celebrations (of pastoral settlement of the Port Phillip District, beginning with the Hentys settlement at Portland Bay on 19 November 1834). Printout of powerpoint presentation given by Helen Hamilton, President of the Alfred Hospital Nurses League, at the Alfred Hospital August 15, 2018, under the auspices of the Alfred Hospital heritage Committee. Haldan Turriff was the first matron of the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne. Haldane was one of a group of nurses under the leadership of Lucy Osburn who had arrived in Sydney in 1868, following a request from Henry Parkes (at the time Colonial Secretary of NSW) to Florence Nightingale for help to improve the standard of nursing in Sydney. Two weeks after their arrival their was an assasination attemt on HRH Prince Alfred. Haldane was one of two nurses chosen to care for him. The Alfred Hosital, which opened in 1871, was named after him and Haldane Turiff became the first matron.
