GEORGE ROSE 1861-1942: - George Rose was a well-known Victorian photographer, famous for his late 19th and early 20th century photography. He was born in Clunes, Victoria, and was in his 20th year when he founded Rose Stereograph Company in 1880. He took the opportunity of a popular trend of the times to produce stereographs, pairs of almost duplicate photographs that appeared in 3D when viewed in a handheld stereo viewer. By the 1920s, these lost their popularity, so he used his photographic skills to produce cards and postcards of scenes and people. The George Rose postcard folders in this set were produced in Victoria and include pictures taken by the renowned photographer between 1880 and 1942. Each postcard records a moment in history and is significant as a way to compare and show the changes in the local environment and community, building a story of the local history. The images record changes in the coastline, land, bay, buildings and other structures, roads, transportation and even the fashions of the times. This copy folder is one of a set of three. This folder has a green-grey textured rectangular card cover with a sketch of a rose on the front. The cover also contains the name of the postcard series, the location of the series' focus, the producer's details, and lines for adding an address. The folded cover contains a long, concertinaed page with six titled photographs on each side, totalling twelve. The folder contains scenes from Warrnambool and nearby popular areas, including Lady Bay, the Port of Warrnambool, the Warrnambool Breakwater, the Viaduct, the Merri River Footbridge, the Hopkins River Mouth, and Proudfoot’s and the Fanny Nelson/Flett boathouses. Three horizontal lines are printed on the front for the receiver’s address. There is a logo of a long-stemmed rose on the left side and inscriptions on the front cover. This postcard folder contains lithographs of photographs taken locally by Georg Rose between 1880 and 1942. He reproduced them at his company's premises, the Rose Stereographic Company at Armadale, Victoria. The postcard folder was purchased as a Warrnambool souvenir by the donor's parents around 1945 to 1950. Interestingly, the city on the cover is printed as "Warrambool", which is a location in New South Wales, but the postcards within all have the locations and text of Warrnambool. The photographs include the 'new' concrete bridge, built in 1922 to replace the original bridge, built in 1872. The boathouses belonging to Proudfoots and to Flett/Fanny Nelson are also pictured on the Hopkins River mouth. The twelve photographs included locations connected to other items in our Collection. Set of seven Rose Series Heritage postcards in a strip production featuring Bendigo Victoria. Each black and white postcard features an historic view of Bendigo from older Rose Series or Valentine's postcards and are perforated on the top and bottom so they can be separately used. On the rear of each card are areas for address, stamps, title, Rose logo and copyright note. Each card has been given a new Rose Series Number. Kew achieved independence from the Boroondara Roads Board in 1860. As a new municipality, its first three leaders were designated as chairmen. On becoming a borough in 1863, its leaders were identified as mayors. The earliest photographs date from ca.1906, when the Town of Kew commissioned the noted local photographer Josiah E Barnes to produce standardised portraits of former mayors to be displayed in the Mayoral Chamber of the Town Hall. The collection also includes photographs by other well-known photographic studios such as Burlington Studios, Melba – Melbourne, Stuart Tompkins, Spencer Shier and Talma & Co. The majority of mounts identify the photographer. Eighty photographs are housed in their original frames.This portrait is one of a series of mounted and framed photographic portraits of Mayors and Town Clerks of the former Borough, Town and City of Kew, for the period 1863 to 1969. The portraits were transferred by the City of Kew to the Kew Historical Society in March 1989. A Significance Assessment in 2018, funded by the National Library of Australia confirmed the historic, and often artistic significance of the series. Framed portrait of Cr. Marie Dalley O.B.E., J.P., Mayor of Kew in 1954-5. The mounting and framing of the photograph follows a typical layout or style in that each is framed in dark wood, glazed, and laid down on an inscribed board. An English actress in her younger days, Camille Treherne was active between 1909 and 1913. She played the role of Empress Marie Louise in "Madame Sans-Gêne" as shown in this postcard image. In her later years, Camille Treherne (Mrs Hill) lived as a recluse in a shack in Ingrams Road, Research, Victoria, Australia. Madame Sans-Gêne is a historical comedy-drama by Victorien Sardou and Émile Moreau, concerning incidents in the life of Catherine Hübscher, an outspoken 18th-century laundress who became the Duchess of Danzig. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. Victorian Heritage Database HO16 Rosecraddock, 2-8 Keverell Road & 4-10 Craddock Avenue Caulfield North https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/35279 (as of 17/02/2021) A single storeyed stuccoed villa with west facing facade consisting of a parapeted and recessed central section with hipped slate roof and timber posted verandah with cast iron lace. Projecting pavilions have bayed windows and a secondary wing runs north with angled corners and prominent chimney stack. The front entrance is situated at the north end of the central section and is given emphasis by a small hip roof and false pediment to the verandah. Outbuildings include the timber stables with characteristic hay loft gablet and fretted barges to the south-east. Rear additions in brick and timber are of an early date and utilitarian in character.
