... i-constance-ross ...Constance Ross was an early pupil at the school attending classes during the Kennedy era (1876 - 1902), teacher until retiring in 1935, but returning 1940 - 1943 during the war years. Constance served on the Clarendon Council 1925 - 1949. In 1954 the school named a visual education centre at the Mair Street campus the IC Ross classroom. The room was furnished and equipped by the Old Collegians Association to honour the long school service of Constance Ross. Large, thick cloth-bound book with embossed design; ornate gold lettering on front cover; very poor condition - lettering missing from spine; the book is accompanied with a hand-written note from Constance Ross dated Nov 1929. 'After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view.' Ewan ROSS Ewen Ross grew in the Wimmera and aims to manifest the changing nature of this landscape in his work. This region is affectionately known as the land of the big sky and it is from this viewpoint looking down and across, which inspires his sense of image making. Occasionally he refers to stories that occurred from times past but generally these images reflect the current state of this land. From 1976 to 1978 Ewan Ross undertook a Diploma of Art (Painting) at Ballarat College of Advanced Education (now Federation University. He was awarded a Graduate Diploma of Education in 1982. He was a Curatorial Assistant at the Art Gallery of Ballarat from 1979 to 1981, and taught Art at Horsham Technical School between 1983 and 1985. From 1986-1897 Ewan Ross taught at the Wimmera Institute of TAFE, and was Lecturer in Painting & Printmaking at the University of Ballarat (nor Federation University from 1998-2005. In 2008 Ewan Ross was a finalist in the Fleurieu Biennale Art Prize. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Ross and Malcolm grew up on their family's tobacco property in Myrtleford, and began skiing at Falls Creek at an early age. They were both taught by Austrian Sigi Haberzettl, who was chief coach at Falls Creek for 17 years. Ross went on to win the North-Eastern District Ski Association (NEDSA) Junior Championships for three years in a row. In 1961 Ross was a member of the Australian team which competed against New Zealand in the Inter-Dominion Championships. In 1963, he won the Downhill and Alpine Combined title at the Australian Championships, while placing second in the Grand Slalom event. Ross Milne was selected in the Australian team that participated in the 1964 Olympic Winter Games at Innsbruck, Austria. A few days before the opening of the Games, on 25 January 1964, he tragically lost his life when he crashed into a tree during a training run for the Men's Downhill. Book, The happy mother & child by Issi Younger Ross, 1940
This book has been written by Dr Isabella Younger Ross. She was born in Warrnambool to John and Henrietta Younger. The Younger family business was a large department store in Liebig Street and it operated for over 60 years. Isabella (Isie)Younger was educated at Hohenlohe College, Warrnambool, studied medicine at Melbourne University and graduated from the University of Glasgow. She worked for some time in Britain, married John Ross in 1916 and returned to Melbourne in 1917. Here she embarked on a medical career, focusing on child health and mothercraft, an area in which she specialized for 40 years. She was the catalyst for the formation of Baby Health Centres in Victoria and was awarded an O.B.E. for her work in infant welfare. She died in 1956.This is a most important book as it is a key early text on infant welfare and it has been written by Dr Isabella Ross who was born in Warrnambool and received her primary and secondary education in that city. She is very important in the history of infant welfare education in Victoria. The book also contains the signature of the author. This is a hard cover book of 184 pages. The cover is light brown/orange with dark brown print on the front cover and on the spine. The book has an Introduction, eleven chapters of text and an Index. There are several black and white sketches scattered throughout the text. The signature of the author in pencil is on the first page. Ross Castle sits on the edge of Killarney's lower lake and was built by O'Donoghue Mór in the 15th century. The Castle came into the hands of the Brownes who became the Earls of Kenmare and owned an extensive portion of the lands that are now part of Killarney National Park . Legend has it that O'Donoghue still exists in a deep slumber under the waters of Lough Leane. On the first morning of May every seven years he rises from the lake on his magnificent white horse and circles the lake. Anyone catching a glimpse of him is said to be assured of good fortune for the rest of their lives. The large rock at the entrance to the bay is known as O'Donoghue's prison. Ross Castle was the last stronghold in Munster to hold out against Cromwell. It was eventually taken by General Ludlow in 1652. This small note book belonged to John Ross, the Warrnambool Town Surveyor and Engineer (1889-1906 & 1913-1914). The book lists the levels taken for the benefit of contractors undertaking jobs for the Warrnambool Council from 1898 to 1902. The jobs include ‘Russells Creek from the Merri River upwards’, ‘Outlet at the Flume’, ‘Guns at the Battery’ and Drainage from the Terminus Hotel to the end of the Japan Street Tunnel’. John Ross was also in private practice with the architectural firm of Ross and Jackman. This notebook is of considerable interest because it is an original note book that belonged to John Ross, the Warrnambool Town Surveyor and Engineer in the late 19h century and early 20th century. The note book contains important information on the engineering projects in Warrnambool and district from 1898 to 1902. This note book has a red leather cover. The cover is a little creased. The inside pages have ruled red lines and printed headings regarding the levels taken of a site and the location of the site (1898 to 1902). The engineer’s entries in the printed columns are handwritten , mostly in pencil. This is a receipt or docket (number 7048) issued by Ross Motors in 1964 for goods supplied to John Wilson of Donovans Road, Warrnambool. Ross Motors were car dealers at 137-149 Fairy Street, Warrnambool in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. They also repaired and serviced cars. In the 1940s they advertised as the ‘largest garage in the Western District’. The docket was for John Alexander Wilson for the purchase of three items from the garage totalling £2-12-0. This docket is of some interest as an example of one from Ross Motors in the 1960s. This is a buff-coloured docket with black lines printed for the firm of Ross Motors, Warrnambool.
