Pumfrey embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Chilka on 2nd February 1915 and returned to Australia on 1st July 1919. McDonald embarked on board HMAT Star of Victoria on 10 September 1915 and, after being shot in the stomach at Pozieres, returned to Australia on 7th August 1916.Seventy six letters of James McDonald (2872 - 5th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement) and thirty five letters of James William Pumfrey (5175 - Light Horse Brigade Train 3), addressed to Miss Ida Rutherford.
